Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf returns to the gallery Magda Danysz after the beginning of year
marked by a lot of museum solo shows and retrospectives from Antwerp to Salamanca, including
The Hague and Paris at the Dutch Institute. On the occasion of this new Parisian exhibition, the
artist presents his last series of photos entitled
Laboral Escena. Inspired by the eponymic building of
the city of Gijon in Spain, the artist has chose to stage
characters suited historicals costumes in stages
reminding the classic paintings of the Spanish Gold
century.
The images of this series honour the works of
historical painters such as Velazquez, El Greco or
Zurbarán, to whom refers Erwin Olaf. His models have
the elegance of Menines of the royal court of Spain,
fabrics are shining and postures are completely similar
whith that of the original figures. Erwin Olaf masters
details and manages to capture the light as old masters
did. He also pursued a research to have the same deep
colors as in the classical paintings.
Nevertheless Olaf's works are not only about
reproducing the works of his predecessors. Every time,
he introduces details and accessories specifics of our time. We discover Marie Anne of Austria
adorned with earphones or the fool Juan de Calabazas wearing a pair of fashionable sneakers.
Somewhere else, a mosaic reminding the work of Mirò decorates the wall of the Cena in Emmaüs.
The essential quality of these historic paintings shows through the virtuoso technique of the
photographer.
