"Emergence of Self at Midlife : Exhibit by Louise and David Weinberg"
2009-09-12 until 2009-10-17
Art Gallery at the Honan-Allston Branch of the Boston Public Library
Allston, MA, USA United States of America

"Emergence of Self at Midlife" a joint exhibit by Louise and David Weinberg The Art Gallery at the Honan-Allston Branch of the Boston Public Library will present "The Emergence of Self in Midlife" by husband and wife artists Louise and David Weinberg from September 12 through October 17, 2009. Although the couple use different media for expression - painting and photography, respectively - their vision reflects a shared interest in the subject of the Self. Guided by the work of Swiss psychologist Carl Jung, the couple visually explore different aspects of the self that emerge over the course of a lifetime. Louise Weinberg promotes her work with an Artist's Portfolio at absolutearts.com.

Louise Weinberg comments in her Artist's Statement, "My paintings deal with my constantly developing understanding of both the psychological and physical phenomenon of containment. The progression of my work over the past ten years documents my experience with the psychological need for containment. Painstaking renderings of eggs, abstractions of apartment buildings stemming from my New York City childhood, maze-like grids--these images, all containers, formed my previous vocabulary. They expressed both a desire for the safety of enclosure and the terror of possible entrapment.

"In my new series I paint spheres, also containers, but the spheres appear to be free, not held down, nor struggling to burst out. The focus has shifted from the concept of containment to that of development, of form and formlessness. The space that surrounds the form, sometimes deep, sometimes shallow, has become increasingly important. The spheres, at once huge or molecular, are also ambiguous.

"In my most recent works, the spheres are seen gradually emerging out of - or dissolving into- this ambiguous space in varying stages of development. The work tells a narrative – of growth and development that in many way mirrors a human life. It is a narrative that proceeds from the original need for containment, through the terror of entrapment and need for individuation, and on to the development and freedom of the gradually emerging spheres."
