Commissioned by the LANXESS Corporation, the worlds leading manufacturer of synthetic rubbe - and with its U.S. headquarters in Pittsburgh - Unnatural Rubber is an art competition that challenged 15 of the worlds leading contemporary artists, including Terence Koh, Agathe Snow and John Waters, to come up with an idea for a new work of art made primarily of synthetic rubber if given as much of the material as they needed.
Each artist was asked to submit a sketch of what they would do if they won the contest, and the winning entry was awarded a $75,000 cash prize and the necessary materials to make the drawing a reality. The winning sculpture, created by Hank Willis Thomas and Ryan Alexiev and all 15 drawings are included in this exhibition which fuses innovation and industry, technology and the arts, in a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the invention of synthetic rubber.
The artists represented in the exhibition includes Chakaia Booker (NYC), Robert Buck (NYC), Tom Burr (NYC), Paolo Canevari (Rome), Liz Craft (LA), Dario Escobar (Guatemala City), Michael Kalmbach (Berlin), Emiko Kasahara (Tokyo & NYC), Terence Koh (NYC), Agathe Snow (NYC), Marc Swanson (NYC), Tony Tasset (Chicago), Hank Willis Thomas and Ryan Alexiev (NYC), Momoyo Torimitsu (NYC), John Waters (Baltimore).
