Die Ausstellung Nuevos Ricos präsentiert erstmalig das gleichnamige Kunstprojekt und Plattenlabel des mexikanischen Künstlers Carlos Amorales in seiner gesamten Produktvielfalt und Reichweite. Die Kunsthalle Fridericianum bietet nicht nur einen Überblick über die Geschichte und die gesellschaftliche Positionierung des Projekts, sondern spiegelt vor allem das breite künstlerische Spektrum wider: Der abstrakte Grundriss einer Konzerthalle wird zur Plattform für Performances und Konzerte ebenso wie für Diskussionen über Themen wie Copyright und Piraterie.

Carlos Amorales (geboren in Mexico City, 1970) ist einer der bedeutendsten mexikanischen Künstler. Seine Medien reichen von Malerei, Zeichnungen und Installationen bis zu Videoanimationen und Performances. 2003 rief Amorales gemeinsam mit dem Musiker Julian Léde das Label Nuevos Ricos ins Leben. Das Projekt, das sich mittlerweile auch in den Bereichen bildende Kunst, Performance und Design vernetzt hat, wird in der Kunsthalle Fridericianum durch eine große Sammlung von Bildern, Postern und Texten, aber auch Tonträgern dokumentiert. In einem Franchise-Shop werden typische Merchandising-Artikel angeboten, während der provokativ gegenübergestellte kolumbianische „Pirate-Franchise-Shop“ Fragen nach Original und Kopie aufwirft und damit sowohl die Musikindustrie als auch den Kunstmarkt berührt. In beiden Bereichen bezieht Nuevos Ricos eine Position, die eine reale Alternative zum reinen Kommerz darstellt. Moderne Mittel wie die digitale Kopie oder der Download im Internet werden nicht als Bedrohung verstanden, sondern als Chance.

Ergänzend zeigt Carlos Amorales einen Ausschnitt seines Liquid Archive: ein digitales Bildarchiv, das zum Fundus einer individuellen Ikonographie geworden ist. Formal reduziert und betont monochrom, vor allem in den Farben Rot und Schwarz, besteht diese grafische Sammlung aus Motiven, die durch immer neue Kombinationen surreale, oft düstere Fantasiewelten entstehen lassen, die sowohl an klassische Mythologie als auch an moderne Horrorfilme – die Parallelwelten des Alltäglichen – erinnern. In der Kunsthalle Fridericianum dient dieses Archiv als Basis für sowohl eine große Wandarbeit in der Rotunde als eine „interaktive Installation“, in der mit auf Postern gedruckten Buchstaben, immer neue Statements zusammengesetzt werden können.

Nuevos Ricos Live in Concert
Elementarer Bestandteil der Ausstellung ist die temporäre Konzerthalle, die Carlos Amorales und Julian Léde am 4. Dezember mit einer Live-Performance eröffnen. Ab 23:30 Uhr findet in der Galerie Loyal die Aftershow-Party mit Silverio (Nuevos Ricos) statt. Es folgen Felix Kubin mit seiner einmaligen Mischung aus Sci-Fi Pop, Noise, Animation Films, Radio Plays and Experimental Broadcasting am 15. Januar 2010, 22 Uhr und der „godfather of digital cumbia“ Dick El Demasiado am 12. Februar 2010, 22 Uhr.

THE VALUE OF VOID ist die erste große Einzelausstellung von Navid Nuur (geboren in Teheran, 1976) in Deutschland. Sein Werk ist geprägt von der Auseinandersetzung mit den sich freisetzenden Prozessen, wenn sich eine Idee zum Kunstwerk manifestiert. Alltagsmaterial wird für Nuur zum künstlerischen Medium und die hintersinnigen Titel der Arbeiten erforschen die Idee, die dahinter steckt. Der Besucher betrachtet nicht das finite Ergebnis, sondern erfährt das Kunstwerk mitsamt seiner Entwicklung.

Für seine Einzelausstellung in der Kunsthalle Fridericianum stellt Navid Nuur ein umfangreiches Ensemble seiner "Intermodule" vor, das in seiner Vielfalt die Besucher einlädt, in seine künstlerische Gedankenwelt einzutauchen. Mit "Modul" nimmt der Künstler Bezug auf die Denkweise sowie auf die tatsächliche Konzeptualisierung, während er mit dem Begriff "Interim" auf den Raum und das Zeitweilige verweist und damit im Besonderen den prozessualen Charakter seiner Arbeiten hervorhebt.

Für die Räume des Fridericianums hat Nuur die Arbeit Let us meet inside you (2008) neu entwickelt und als Mauer aus 7000 Wasserflaschen in Kisten konzipiert. Auf jeder Flasche ist die Aufforderung des Titels zu lesen und der Prozess rückt in den Mittelpunkt, indem die Flaschen direkt im Fridericianum mit Wasser befüllt werden. Dieser Mauer steht eine zwanzig Meter lange Wand aus Steckschwämmen für Blumengestecke gegenüber, an deren Außenrändern der Künstler mit seinen Fingern Druckstellen hinterlässt, so dass der Eindruck des Auflösens und Verschwindens entsteht. Den Vorgang beschreibt er selbst als "leaving more and more emotional marks on the rational block". Zudem werden die Arbeiten Citysoil, die Leuchtkasten-Arbeit Vibes, eine neue Polaroid-Serie sowie die Neon-Arbeit Tentacle Thought Nr. 5 gezeigt. Die Form der Einbindung dieser Arbeit in das Kasseler Konzept stellt die Frage nach neuen Licht- und Materialverhältnissen; so erklärt Navid Nuur: „Mit dieser Arbeit wird Licht als komplexe Ganzheit betrachtet und nicht nur als Beleuchtung, die ein Kunstwerk hervorhebt.“

With solo exhibitions by the Mexican artist Carlos Amorales and the Dutch artist Navid Nuur, the Kunsthalle Fridericianum once again reveals itself to be an important venue for topical debates on human issues. Although the two artists make use of very different formal vocabularies, performativity and processuality figure prominently in the work of both. “Amorales’ idiosyncratic and bold representation of the music industry forms a brutal counterpoint to Nuur’s subtle obstacle course of so-called intermodules which seem to playfully generate meanings inherent to the materials they are made of.” (Rein Wolfs)

Carlos Amorales (born in Mexico City in 1970) is one of the most important Mexican artists. His media range from paintings, drawings and installations to video animations and performances. Together with the musician Julian Léde, he called the label Nuevos Ricos into being in 2003. The project, which has since been linked to the fine arts, performance and design, will be documented at the Kunsthalle Fridericianum by a vast collection of pictures, posters and texts, as well as sound recording media. Typical merchandising articles will be presented in a franchise shop, while the provocatively juxtaposed Columbian “Pirate Franchise Shop” will raise questions about original and copy, touching upon both the music industry and the art market. In both areas Nuevos Ricos takes a position that represents a real alternative to pure commerce. Modern strategies such as digital copying or downloading from the Internet are not viewed as threats but as opportunities.

In addition, Carlos Amorales will present an excerpt of his Liquid Archive, a digital picture archive that became a store of individual iconography. Formally reduced and emphatically monochrome, particularly in the colours red and black, this pictorial collection consists of motifs which through ever-new combinations give rise to surreal, often bleak fantasy worlds recalling both classical mythology and modern horror movies – parallel worlds to everyday life. At the Kunsthalle Fridericianum this archive serves as a basis for both a large wall piece in the rotunda and an “interactive installation”, in which letters printed on posters can be combined to form ever-changing statements.

Nuevos Ricos Live in Concert
An elementary part of the exhibition is the temporary concert hall that Carlos Amorales and Julian Léde will inaugurate on 4 December with a live performance. On the very same night at 11.30 p.m. Silverio (Nuevos Ricos) will perform on the aftershow party at Galerie Loyal, Kassel. Subsequently Felix Kubin will present his unique mixture of sci-fi pop, noise, animation films, radio play and experimental broadcasting, on 15 January 2010 at 10 p.m., and the “godfather of digital cumbia” Dick El Demasiado will perform on 12 February 2010, also at 10 p.m.

THE VALUE OF VOID

THE VALUE OF VOID is the first large solo exhibition devoted to the work of Navid Nuur (born in Teheran in 1976) in Germany. His work is characterised by an investigation of processes that are triggered when an idea crystallises into an artwork. For Nuur, everyday material becomes an artistic medium and the work titles with their deeper meanings explore the idea behind them. The visitor does not view the finite result, but rather experiences the artwork along with its development.

For his solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Navid Nuur will present a comprehensive ensemble of his “Intermodules”, which with their variety invite the viewer to delve into his artistic world. With “module” the artist alludes to both the way of thinking and the actual conceptualisation process, while the term “interim” refers to the space and the temporary aspect, thus particularly emphasising the processual character of his work.

Nuur redeveloped the work Let us meet inside you (2008) for the rooms of the Fridericianum, conceiving it as a wall composed of 7000 water bottles in crates. The request of the title can be read on every bottle and the process becomes the focus, as the bottles are filled with water directly in the Fridericianum. This wall stands across from a twenty-metre-long wall composed of oasis sponges for flower arrangements. On the outside edges, the artist dents the material with his fingers, creating an impression of dissolution and disappearance. He describes the process as “leaving more and more emotional marks on the rational block". Furthermore, the work Citysoil, the lightbox work Vibes, a new Polaroid series and the neon work Tentacle Thought No. 5 will be shown. The way in which the latter work is integrated into the Kassel concept puts new relations between light and material up for discussion, as the artist explains: “With this work light is viewed as a complex totality and not only as illumination that highlights an artwork.”

San Keller
Pre-, Pre-, Pre-, Pre-, Preview

San Keller (born in Bern in 1971) has garnered international attention with his participatory performances and provocative interventions. For Keller, art is not only challenging in terms of its content: “... Keller is at his most convincing when he uses his deceptive aura of sincerity, and his knack for audience interaction, to survey the rituals and pecking orders of the artworld itself, perusing the unsavory pleasures of social hierarchy and other intellectual routines that are so distinctive of the field. Such as the fantasies of permanence and posterity, the wishful notions of trust and communication between artist and audience, and the patchy historical sensibilities that make things even more arbitrary than they need to be.” (Tirdad Zolghadr, Frieze, April 2007)

In Kassel, he will explore and discuss the exhibition format in his longer-term project Pre-, Pre-, Pre-, Pre-, Preview. In a skilful, ironic, intelligent and playful way he will undermine conventional formats and make institutional processes transparent. The visitors are invited to attend the preparatory discussions with the artist and the artistic director. Alongside Pre-, Pre-, Pre-, Pre-, preview the participatory performance Digestiv (Walk) additionally forms a parenthesis for the current exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Fridericianum and critically engages with them. San Keller invites visitors to take a stroll with him around the forecourt after leaving the Kunsthalle Fridericianum to discuss the present exhibition with him.
