First originating in Tamil Nadu, Bharatanatyam is a traditional Indian dance-form which focuses on devotion (bhakti) to God and is known for its grace, purity, compassion, and sculpture-like poses. Performed mainly by women, Bharatanatyam combines spiritual symbolism and elements such as Nritta (rhythmic, pure dance movements), Natya (imitation, or dance with a theatrical aspect) and Nritya, a combination of the two. Bharatanatyam is a dance that embodies the movements and elements of fire, and is one of the five major styles of dance in India. It is a solo dance with two aspects similar to the yin and yang, a feminine side with graceful movements and a side with a violent, masculine nature.

About Aishwarya Narayanaswamy
Aishwarya Narayanaswamy's grace, neat footwork and beauty of expression have captivated audiences since the age of eight. Aishwarya, now 21, is the senior most student of Bharathanjali, studying and preparing in every area of Bharatanatyam including choreography, nattuvangam, music and the theory of dance. Her eloquence and relentless hard work shows in every performance. Aishwarya also performs in celebrated Bharathanjali productions, with roles such as Shiva in "Mahadevam Mahasenam bhaje" and Andal in "Thiruppavai," as well as performing solo pieces. She has received recognition through different awards, scholarships and prizes, including the "Singar Mani" title for her performance in the 47th Kal Ke Kalakar Sangeet Sammelan. Aishwarya's amazing rhythmic command and pleasing stage presence with nimble and sprightly form, makes Bharathanatyam a pleasure to watch.
