STEVE MAZZA
UNNATURAL SELECTION

Cambridge Galleries Preston
November 7, 2009 - January 10, 2010
Opening Reception: Thursday, November 12 at 7:00 pm

Curated by Ivan Jurakic

Unnatural Selection is a title that artist Steve Mazza has used to
describe an idiosyncratic world he has populated with creatures culled
straight from his childhood. Several new works will debut in the
exhibition alongside a recent collaboration with Brantford artist Dave
Hind. Mazza turns the gallery into a dream-like setting featuring his
distinct animal-human hybrids. His kiln fired figures draw on a range of
sources ranging from children's fairytales to comic books, and often
allude to the industrial landscape of the artist's hometown of Hamilton.
Despite their colourful and cartoony appearance, these works are not
always cheery. They routinely allude to the darker side of modern life.
His anthropomorphic figures reenact the drudgery of daily routines in
the home and workplace to suggest the universality of our failings and
foibles.

Please join us for the opening reception on Thursday November 12 at 7:00
pm, and meet the artist in person.

Steve Mazza was raised in Hamilton and attended the University of
Toronto and Sheridan College's collaborative Art and Art History
Program, earning an Honours Specialist Degree in Art and Art History.
After graduating, the artist spent time living in the United States
before returning to Hamilton and becoming involved in the arts
community, actively exhibiting his own work and organizing events. The
artist is represented by Transit Gallery, Hamilton.
