Saturday Lights Up the Season
The Brooklyn Museum's Target First
Saturdays
attract thousands of visitors to free
programs of art and entertainment each month.
The December 5 event celebrates seasonal
festivals of light from around the world and
shines a light on the special exhibition
James Tissot: "The Life of Christ."
DECEMBER 5 SCHEDULE OF PROGRAMS
5-8 p.m. Music
Three Dutch performances: Michael Varekamp's
Caribbean jazz ensemble, the rock band EveNi,
and MC Lee-Ursus Alexander create a gezellig,
or cozy, atmosphere.
5:30-6:30 p.m. Film and Performance
La Vie du Christ (The Life of Christ)
(Alice
Guy Blaché, 1906, 34 min., NR). This silent
film by the first female director drew
inspiration from James Tissot's watercolor
series The Life of Christ. Live piano
music
by Ben Model will accompany the film. Judith
Dolkart, former Associate Curator of European
Art and curator of James Tissot: "The Life of
Christ" and Joan Simon, Whitney Curator at
Large, will introduce the film and answer
questions following the screening. Free
tickets available at the Visitor Center at 5
p.m.
6:30-8:30 p.m. Hands-On Art
Create a stained-glass decoration to catch
the winter light. Free timed tickets
available at the Visitor Center at 5:30 p.m.
7 p.m. Film
A Hard Day's Night (Richard Lester,
1964, 87
min., NR). The critically acclaimed comedy
starring the Beatles at the height of
Beatlemania. Free tickets available at the
Visitor Center at 6 p.m.
7 p.m. Curator Talk
Kevin Dumouchelle, Interim Assistant
Curator of the Arts of Africa and the Pacific
Islands, discusses the Museum's collection of
African art. Free tickets available at the
Visitor Center at 6 p.m.
7:30-8:30 p.m. Music
The award-winning Brooklyn Youth Chorus
presents music inspired by Tissot's The Life
of Christ.
8 p.m. Book Signing
William Siegmann, Curator Emeritus of
African Art, signs copies of African Art: A
Century at the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum's
new catalogue of its African art collection.
8 p.m. Young Voices Gallery
Talk
Student Guides give a talk on the Tissot
exhibition.
9-9:30 p.m. Focus Group
Tell us what would bring you back to the
Museum for another Target First Saturday.
9-10 p.m. Book Club
Renowned New York City disc jockey Pete
Fornatale discusses his new book Back to the
Garden: The Story of Woodstock. A book
signing follows.
9-11 p.m. Dance Party
Brooklyn's Soul Summit brings the heat of
summer to the dance floor.
Throughout the evening, a cash bar will offer
beer and wine, and the Museum Café will serve
a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, and
beverages. The Museum Shop will remain open
until 11 p.m.
Some Target First Saturday programs have
limited space and must be ticketed; lines for
free tickets often form 30 minutes in
advance. Programs are subject to change
without notice. Museum admission is free after 5
p.m. Museum galleries are open until 11 p.m.
Parking is a flat rate of $4 from 5 to 11 p.m.
