Grand Rapids, MI, November 19, 2009 –In correlation with the ArtPrize Announcement today, UICA is proud to announce our participation in ArtPrize 2010 at the New UICA. Located at the center of the city, UICA will dedicate all fourteen galleries of our new space to ArtPrize exhibits. UICA will play a dynamic role in ArtPrize 2010, serving as an installation site while enhancing the event with hands-on experiences and educational programs.
During ArtPrize 2009, UICA presented the work of over 75 artists from around the world at two of the most admired venues. We received almost 80,000 visitors in just two weeks, surpassing our yearly attendance of 50,000 visitors. UICA, along with eight other organizations, initiated ARTcation Day serving 1,900 students with art curriculum around ArtPrize exhibits. We offered innovative artist talks, such as Slide Wars and the popular Brunch and Banter series, as well as a public forum to discuss ArtPrize’s Top 10, in our Critical Discourse: Battle of the Top Ten event.
UICA’s new facility, on the southwest corner of Fulton and Division, will allow UICA to present an even more dynamic array of contemporary art, new media, and experimental design/architecture projects. Featuring 8,500 sq. ft. of gallery space, two theatres, a 1,000 sq. ft. youth studio, 3,000 sq. ft. ceramics studio, two lounges, two reading areas, an artist-in-residence studio, and a 3,500 sq. ft. outdoor sculpture terrace. Through this facility, UICA will more effectively contribute to attracting and retaining creative, urban-oriented professionals in West Michigan. We will activate the Division Avenue corridor and offer a vibrant anchor to the emerging Avenue for the Arts. Finally, the New UICA will advance our region's growing reputation for groundbreaking green initiatives by creating one of the nations first LEED-certified facilities uniting nonprofit, government, retail and residential components.
