Barbara Nessim is laureate at Norman Rockwell Museum

STOCKBRIDGE – Using lines, colors and undulating patterns, Barbara Nessim blends the modern and primitive to illustrate the world and its composite pieces.

Whether she's showing the struggle for gender equality or questioning the concept of female beauty, Nessim – the Norman Rockwell Museum's newly minted Artist Laureate – often hits political notes with her illustrations.

But don't call her an activist artist. "I'm more of a reporter," said Nessim, 70, a native New Yorker who owns a home in Savoy and spends most of her time in Manhattan.

"My work is open to different interpretations," she said. "I think a political illustrator is a very different animal than myself."

A sampling of Nessim's work, which ranges from fine art to commercial illustration and design, is now on display at the Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, including illustrations for advertising campaigns by Ralph Lauren and Levi Strauss & Co.

The Exhibit, located in the Frederick W. Richmond Foundation Lobby on the Rockwell's lower floor, also includes Nessim's 1988 Rolling Stone cover illustration of John Lennon, which...
