FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Model Behavior A Group Exhibition December 1 – 15, 2009 Opening Reception December 3, 2009 6-8pm
SAN FRANCISCO November 1, 2009 HANG ART is pleased to present Model Behavior, a collection of new works by Sukey Bryan, David Fullarton, Phillip Hua, Hugo Kobayashi, Katja Leibenath, Eddie O Rodriguez, and Piero Spadaro. A reception for the artists will be held on First Thursday, December 3, 2009 from 6pm to 8pm at HANG ART, 567 Sutter Street, San Francisco. On view December 1 - 15 2009, Model Behavior consists of works created by a select group of HANG artists that participated in a private figure drawing and painting session November 15th in the gallery. The results; reworked and polished, will be featured in this exhibition. Sukey Bryan’s paintings put into effect the gathering of order in the midst of swirling chaos. By paring away details so that the familiar becomes strange and beautiful, Sukey imparts some of the awe and wonder of the natural world. David Fullarton delights in lifting phrases and images from their contexts and placing them in new surroundings that amend and redirect their meaning. With decidedly adult humor, the work celebrates the strangeness of daily life, memorializes events from his own past, and gently mocks common human foibles. Phillip Hua seeks to depict the convergence between contemporary society and the process of painting. For his recent series, images, painted and manipulated on the computer, are superimposed onto sheets of paper. Hua has been featured in 7x7 Magazine, California Home and Design, and Interior Design Magazine. Hugo Kobayashi’s artistic goal is to combine the graphic techniques of cartooning and design with a painterly brushstroke and representational approach that can both tell personal stories and comment on the world at large. Katja Leibenath’s paintings look for the noteworthy in the everyday and beauty in the seemingly mundane. Elevating an image to another level by reproducing it in a different format, her paintings morph under a multitude of layers. Eddie O. Rodriguez believes social distance to be a phenomenon that explains the way we act and react while caught in a large group that is confined to a small space. Rodriguez believes we observe the ways others navigate their surroundings, maintaining a safe distance physically and emotionally from the people around them. Piero Spadaro chooses materials that evoke the interaction of the natural and unnatural. He presses, scratches, and brushes the work with resin, branches, metal and wax, creating engaging and calming surfaces. HANG ART is located at 567 Sutter Street, between Mason and Powell Streets. Gallery hours are Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday from 12pm to 5pm. For further information or high resolution images, please call 415 434 4264.
