The Corporeal Dream - A Solo Exhibition by Lie Fhung will present her most current works up to date exploring three major themes that she have been working on for the last few years: 'To Breed Or Not To Breed', 'Hidden Growth' and 'The Dream Archives'. The connecting factor between these three themes is that all three are concerned with the physical body (corporeal) and the subconscious/spiritual realm (dream). 'To Breed Or Not To Breed' is an ongoing series exploring the dilemma of reproduction. Begun in 2005 with a few long hiatus in between, the works in this series range from artist's books to paintings to mixed-media objects and installation - most of which have been shown in her previous exhibitions. In 2009, she continues to develop this theme using mainly digital medium, subtitled 'Ancestry'. 'Ancestry' takes a 19th-20th Century European tradition in displaying ancestral and family portraits in framed clusters in living rooms as its model. However, instead of displaying photographs of great-grandparents, grandparents or parents with perhaps their siblings, 'Ancestry' portrays the potential parents and their potential descendants. It is also an homage for babies unborn for various reasons, for those could have been/would have been‚ embryos, for those seeds and eggs that never met to procreate. Each cluster of 'Ancestry' consists of several framed digital prints, anywhere between three to seven. The images are created on a Mac computer using a Wacom tablet and a stylus in Photoshop, substituting conventional canvas and paint brush. They are then printed on archival quality artist canvas with archival quality ink and coated with a protective layer, resulting in prime quality archival prints.
'Hidden Growth' deals with bodies - or rather, with the unseen beneath them and with the passage of time implied. Growth - as in constructive developments and as in destructive diseases, their progression and their often mysterious or clandestine nature are some of the occupying thoughts in this work. is a series of works in progress dealing with bodies - or rather, with the unseen beneath them and with the passage of time implied. The constant shape and pattern that appears in this project is that of a female torso with intricate flourishes made from various materials from canvas to wire-mesh to paper-thin porcelain appears which might be concealed or shown. In the first work in this project, she documented, with a digital camera, the process of painting the canvas torso before it was sewn together. In the final work, these are printed on fine art paper and then framed to be an integral part of the work - showing the passage of time in reverse and in doing so, showing what is now hidden. Besides painted canvas, she also uses silk, mesh-wire, copper wire and porcelain in her further exploration on this subject.
'The Dream Archives' is a series of mixed-media installations in development investigating the realm of subconsciousness; of dream in its multiple and layered meanings. Enabled by generous support from KOLO with their excellent archival quality Havana Boxes that are used to make the 'Portals', which are the first part of the Dream Archives Series. Each box contains different things. Some boxes go together as diptychs or triptychs, some as solos - but all together they form the Dream Archives. The object inside each box varies from one to another, ranging from paintings to digital prints to handmade objects to interactive contraptions. Each of these objects signifies a certain dream in its various meanings. Audience are encouraged to gently open each of the boxes to find out what is waiting for them inside.
