Ms. Borkowska, born in Koszalin, Poland, in 1972, earned her doctorate in
political science at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, where
she lectured on the history of political thought and international
relations. She published a book on Cathars, medieval dissidents, after
having conducted research in Montpellier, Carcassonne, Paris and Oxford.
In September 2007 she left her academic career in order to devote all of
her creative energies to art.
Despite the fact that she has been painting for over ten years, Ms.
Borkowska's works were first exhibited in the National Museum in Szczecin,
Poland, in October of this year. The exhibition, Parallel Worlds, runs
through November 22nd. Three paintings from this exhibit - Cosmic Gate,
From the Other Side, and Elements of the Universe - will travel from
Szczecin to be displayed at the Florence Biennale 2009. This will mark Ms.
Borkowska's international debut.
These particular paintings reflect the artist's interests in quantum
physics and the construction of the universe. Her unique technique,
characterized by an intense exploration of color and texture, causes the
canvases to vibrate, hypnotizing the viewers, pulling them into another realm of consciousness.
The main idea which Maciej Hoffman would like to express is artisic independence
and freedom as a basic element of creation. "In painting, I appreciate the
courage of opinion and freedom as the means of expression. I do not like
decorative-ness and submission to trends or fashion. I emphasize no means of
expression or artistic techniques - the intellectual values of art are more
important to me than the style in which they are expressed. In the modern world,
art is the margin of freedom, which can and should be used."
In the past months Maciej Hoffman has also taken part in a post-contest
exhibition titled "Urban Legends" in Manhattan. He also participated in the
15th Interational of Vendas Novas - group show in Portugal and in November
had a solo exhibition at the Warsaw State Gallery - TEST.
