"Florida Artist Michel Pellus Releases the First in a Series of New Lithographs"
2009-12-10 until 2010-03-30
Michel Pellus
Boca Raton, FL, USA United States of America

A thought. A leaf floating. A soupçon of anticipation. These are some of the words used to describe the refined simplicity of Michel Pellus’ new, hand-made, limited edition lithographs. After 27 years, Florida-based artist and absolutearts.com Premiere Member, Michel Pellus, well-known for his over-sized, stylized, larger-than-life figures of women and urban cityscapes, is reprising his interest in lithographs with a series of intensely creative, hand-drawn, vividly colored, newly imagined lithographs. Pellus decided to start creating lithographs again after many years of seeing the terms Limited Edition, original, and lithograph continually abused by attaching them to photo reproductions. This is an actual original limited edition of lithographs.

Single Cherry is the first edition in an intended series. Pellus is renowned for his paintings of high-gloss cherries.

Pellus created a limited edition of 65 prints, including 6 artist’s proofs, 3 museum proofs, and one printer’s proof. These lithographs are hand drawn and printed on a 25” x 17.5’ acid-free BFK Reeves paper. Each lithograph is signed and numbered in pencil by the artist, and a certificate of authenticity is included.

In this striking lithograph, the high-intensity, vivid red cherry on a stem with one green leaf is set on a plain white background. The powerful statement is juxtaposed by the image of innocence and freshness.

These original creations reflect Pellus’ distinctive and unique technique and style. They are defined as much by what Pellus doesn’t include, as by what he does. Pellus, a master of sublety and innuendo whispers a suggestion and lets viewers realize their own meaning.

His style is characterized by simplicity of design, meticulous technique, and the use of rich, chromatic colors. His distinctive approach allows for vibrant color application, resulting in grand images and lasting effects.

Says Pellus, “I am excited to be part of the absolutearts.com community. I see our relationship as a way to reach a large, sophisticated audience who have a real appreciation of art.” If you would like to purchase a lithograph from this edition, please click here.

About the Artist:

Michel Pellus was born in Montréal, Canada in 1945, the descendant of artists and artisans. His grandfather, Guillaume Pellus, restored stained glass in France during the WWI and his father, Raymond Pellus, was one of the first students at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal and a professor of art for 35 years. His mother, Tina Roy, also graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts.

Self-taught as an artist, Pellus’ work has evolved over the span of his career. His early works were characterized by humor, optimism and symbolism. Realistic figures were set in fantasy landscapes giving a sense of cosmic duality. Pellus has coined the term “subjective realism” to describe this style of painting.

In his mid-thirties, Pellus, searching for freedom and liberation like another famous French artist, Paul Gaugin, decamped to a remote island in the Bahamas.

This was a defining period in Pellus’ personal life and career. Paradoxically, while on the remote, nearly-deserted island, Pellus created some of his most striking cityscapes of New York City street scenes.

Says Pellus, “My work is a visual poem. I seek to capture a moment in time – that particular moment- not the moment before, nor the moment after.”

In the 1970s, Pellus created a series of lithographs including Flights of Fancy and Le Cliché, that were printed by the renowned atelier of Eleanor Ettinger, the publisher for Norman Rockwell’s prints. La Scène was used as a fundraiser for the Theatre du Nouveau Monde in Montreal, Canada.

For Levine & Levine Graphics, he created a series of lithographs including, Homage to the Masters, which paid tribute to Dali, Picasso, and Chagall and Problématique in honor of Einstein’s 100th birthday.

Pellus is the recipient of Hallmark and Max Factor Awards and his work can be found in the hands of private collectors such as Robert Altman and Pierre Cardin as well as throughout North America.

His paintings hang in the Musée d’Arts Contemporain de Montréal and have been on display at the Louvre in Paris, France. His works have been featured in publications such as Florida Design Magazine, Art of the Times Magazine and The Palm Beach Post.

For the past 15 years he has been affiliated with the Karen Lynne Gallery in Boca Raton, Florida.
