EDGE Gallery is pleased to announce the group exhibition Bodies in motion, Bodies at Rest, selected highlights and new works of UK Photographer Gareth Brown. The exhibition is part of an ongoing photographic site-specific dance exploration of Hong Kong by photographer Gareth Brown. Brown is fascinated by both historical and contemporary HK and seeks to document the changing faces of our land and infrastructures through time. The works cover both urban and rural locales, places that have been created or affected by man. These locations may have historical, cultural or environmental interest or none of the afore-mentioned.
About the artist
Gareth Brown is originally from Wales and has been based in HK since 1996, establishing Blow Up Studios soon after. He started his career in the late 80s in London, working on dance music videos for Crunch Productions & Stigma Films. During that time he became increasingly interested in capturing the defining moment of movement through stills photography. As well as dance, his work covers a diverse spectrum of subject matter including fashion, fitness, lifestyle, portraiture and interiors for both local and international clients. He is a member of the HKIPP and AOP.
> He utilises dancers of different genres for each segment of the project. Photographer and dancer collaborate closely to bring to life the chosen location in a site-specific dance.
There is a flux in how we use the land and the structures we build on it. We design its form and use, but mans influence is ephemeral. In time, the form and use change, while in between the space falls into a lull, awaiting reinvigoration. Similarly in Dance, there‚s a flux in the relationship between the fall and recovery of the dancers movements, the moment of repose before a new action emerges: Bodies in Motion, Bodies at Rest.
The highlights exhibition includes images from the original Bodies in Motion, Bodies at Rest exhibition (a kick-off programme of Swire Island East Urban Dance Festival) as well as new works specifically shot for the Edge Gallery exhibition.
