During January 2010 Kibbee Gallery in Atlanta Presents Preston Snyder, an emerging Atlanta painter, exhibiting
"Pugilism", a collection of figurative paintings based upon images of fighters. Kibbee Gallery is an alternative gallery with a primary focus on emerging Atlanta artists. According to Snyder, his recent body of work includes abstracted figure studies of boxers and fighters presented as metaphors for and studies of conflict, challenge, fear, violence and primal instincts in personal, group and national dynamics. His work is informed and influenced by heroes Van Gogh, Picasso, Hopper and Bellows.
Snyder has had a lifelong interest,
involvement in and appreciation
for historic architecture
and has been practicing martial
arts for over 30 years, which
informs his figurative work.
Snyder commented, "the image on the wall is a component of the experience, but the goal of the work is to generate mental imagery and provoke thought entirely unique to the viewer. If sufficient visual interest is created for the viewer to briefly disengage and consider an alternate perspective of his or her own experience, it's a successful piece in my eyes. The message and the experience will likely vary from viewer to viewer. I certainly hope it does!" Kibbee Gallery is an alternative commercial gallery space located in the heart of the poncey-highlands neighborhood. The gallery takes space on the lower level of an old home directly behind Fellini's restaurant on Ponce. This alternative setting lends itself to various interpretations of the space - the fireplace mantel and "stairway to nowhere" are key fixtures. Kibbee is walking distance to a variety of exhibition spaces, including Youngblood gallery and boutique, Vacation and San Francisco coffee.
Currently the gallery is open to the public the nights of the opening and closing receptions. Appointments can be made for additional viewing with the artist contact and their respective exhibition.
