Trine Bumiller's paintings are nature-based abstractions inspired by the physical and metaphysical worlds. The works consist of multi-panel assemblages of paintings in various sizes, attached vertically and horizontally in off-kilter, asymmetrical compositions. She states, "My paintings are about finding meaning beyond the visible world. Through abstraction my work explores and searches beneath the tangible for the conceptual: the patterns, connections, and universal theories that order our environment and our selves."
"Many layers of transparent oil glazes are built up to reveal and conceal elements of the original form, convey obscurity and timelessness, and a sense of the core issues of life and existence." The color schemes are quiet and contemplative earth tones and ice blues, evoking the meditative state of experiencing nature, firsthand. Scale and referents jump from the molecular to the cosmic, linear elements of branches, river systems, silhouettes of reeds and leaves are combined with soft, biomorphic shapes suggesting burning embers, rain drops, snow or light bouncing off the surface of water. These naturally occurring patterns create a rhythm and symmetry in the work that also reflect the broader theme of the lifecycle renewing itself.
Trine Bumiller received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. She is the recipient of a number of awards and residencies including a Yaddo Residency in New York. Bumiller's paintings have been exhibited across the U.S. and internationally in Milan and Rome. This will be Trine Bumiller's second solo show with Zg Gallery, Chicago. "Liminal: New Paintings" will open Friday, March 5th and run through April 10th, 2010.
