The works in this exhibition examine notions of Nationalism, cultural identity and place  through our forefathers fossil fixation and design languages ranging from the neurotic rusticity of Robert Reamer to the Industrial Persona of Raymond Loewy. Throughout the works, the visual  languages of Noguchi's Akari, Loewy's Space Suit, Indiana's Hickory and Jefferson's Megalonyx  are all employed in considering the history of  the increasingly convoluted 19-20th century  adaptation of the psychology of entitlement  and  models of  cultural and environmental othering. 

This exhibition features  a number of new, large scale sculptural works and artifacts alongside a series of furniture pieces from the artist's collaborative design project, Kaguya. The furniture works were conceived by the artist as a series of unique pieces  to be released as the first  run in a seasonal line, thematically designed by guest curators/designers and produced by Kaguya. 

Looking out fearfully upon the confined deep  takes it's name from an 1845 description of Hornby lodge, an early retreat  in the Adirondack.

These exhibitions provide a short, sharp, rapid-fire look at current artistic practices amongst contemporary artists today, particularly in Southern California, and act as a real time barometer of art here and now.

Sea and Space
March 4 – March 6, 2010
Founded in 2007 as a non-profit artist run gallery, Sea and Space is a highly collaborative venue dedicated to presenting challenging contemporary art practices largely unsupported by commercial spaces. The space hosts exhibitions, lectures, workshops, performances, and happenings. Sea and Space Explorations is a portal to a place where notions of good and bad, market constraints, and fixations with progress are understood to be peripheral, where artists take risks without fear. Kristin duCharme
March 11-13, 2010
Kristin duCharme's exhibition consists of such diverse pieces as a large hand knotted wool carpet, a ten-foot tall oil painting/sculpture and two upholstered wall sculptures. Together the traditionally domestic references of the materials and the imagery of children add to the implications evoked by the viewer’s sense of subjects that are understood and familiar. By repositioning these references, the exhibition traverses the line of unspoken yet socially agreed upon rules. Through humor and Dada-ish overtones duCharme’s works are punctuated with a lump-in-the-throat seriousness when the viewer is struck by the quiet familiarity of subject mater as very personal.

Monte Vista
March 18-20, 2010
Monte Vista is an artist-run space in Highland Park. Since July 2007, they have hosted exhibitions, lectures, events, and performances. The space is self-determining, with the general aims of providing a platform for art and conversation, emphasizing experimentation and artworks that contribute to non-traditional dialogues.

>From March 17–20, Monte Vista will be part of the 12 Gauge series. As part of this 3 day exhibition, the seven artists who currently run Monte Vista will show a sampling of their own work as well as a collaborative collage that playfully illustrates past members, events, and exhibitions that have been hosted at Monte Vista since 2007.

On Saturday the 20th from 11am–5pm, the Monte Vista artists have organized several events. Frank Chang will be offering up a “Psychic Juice Bar”, in which he has invited psychic artist, Asher Hartman, to give psychic aura readings. Chang and Hartman will interpret the aura reading into a personalized and unique juice mixture. Other events of the day include a musical performance by Tom Harris, Rafe Mandel, and Dan Hockinson (organized by Jay Lizo); a performance by Candice Lin; and a chance to make your own Monte Vista poster at the hands-on silk screening workshop, led by Chris Bassett and Christie Williams. Monte Vista artists Shizu Saldamando and Nikki Pressley will be assisting at these events as well. All events are free and open to the public.

Phantom Galleries
March 25 – 27, 2010
Phantom Galleries LA (PGLA) is a Los Angeles County based organization that transforms properties in transition into temporary public art galleries. PGLA partners with local property owners with a desire to activate non-utilized space with local artists, curators and arts organizations interested in exhibition space. Each exhibit becomes a unique collaboration between the interested parties and their surrounding community. PGLA’s focus and goal is to bolster efforts to create a more culturally stimulating Los Angeles where inspirational, educational, art experiences transpire throughout the urban landscape, 24/7, 365 days a year.

Five Curators who participate in PGLA programming have been given a project space to showcase an artist and or project. A visual history documentary of past PGLA exhibits will be screened and looped.
