Maleonn was born in 1972
in Shanghai.
Being the Theatre of Life is what reunites all Maleonn's photographic series.
In White on White Maleonn takes it up a notch and one gets a front seat in the
Theatre of China. Maleonn sheds a light, or at least captures it through his
lense, on China. Being in the present is about acknowledging the past in order
to be heading towards the future.
White on White is the metaphor for the memories fading away. Like photographs
that become all white once the image has fainted. As Baudelaire wrote "The
days go away, I remain", but for Maelonn the days go away and memories
fade away. Memories work like the photography process where everything is slowly
revealed but in the other way. Would photography be for Maleonn the way to keep
away from the undeniable: memories do fade away in our mind ?
Though photographs do fade away too sometime Are transformed, paper get
yellow, the color and details get worn out, tired of being glossy, shinny, over
exposed.
The whole question of what is remembered in time is crucial to Maleonn. As a
key witness of China's great changes, Maleonn can not help to think about what
will remain, what will be remembered. Collecting old letters, old photos, old
notebooks from different people, either known to the artist or anonymous, is
like a salvation process. Art versus time. Art as a salvation process to keep
the memories alive.
