In seiner bisher größten Ausstellung verwandelt Thomas Zipp die Kunsthalle Fridericianum in eine "psychiatrische Anstalt". Unter dem Titel (WHITE REFORMATION CO-OP) MENS SANA IN CORPORE SANO verbindet Zipp Skulpturen, Zeichnungen und Malerei mit einer umfassenden Ausstellungsarchitektur zu einer Gesamtinstallation.

Das komplette Gebäude erfährt eine Transformation: Die goldene Portalinschrift MUSEUM FRIDERICIANUM wird durch die Worte MENS SANA IN CORPORE SANO ersetzt und das Foyer zur Eingangshalle der Anstalt umgebaut. In einem surrealen Parcours aus architektonischen Einbauten widmet sich die Ausstellung Fragen nach Norm und Abweichung, sozialer Ausgrenzung sowie der Einordnung des Selbst in die Gesellschaft. Durch ein dichtes, assoziatives Netz aus Gemälden, Grafiken und Skulpturen führen verwinkelte dunkle Gänge, die von weißen Türen gesäumt werden. Einige dieser Türen geben Räume preis, die einen Einblick in die Untiefen der Anstalt gewähren. Vorbei an Schul- und Behandlungszimmern, Werkstätten und Waschsälen gelangt der Besucher in den Speisesaal, in die Chefetage und nicht zuletzt in eine Gummizelle.

Eine düstere Ästhetik macht sich breit und weckt unbehagliche Assoziationen und Gedanken an so genannte Heil- und Besserungsanstalten vergangener Zeiten. Thomas Zipp (geboren in Heppenheim, 1966) versteht es, historische und geisteswissenschaftliche Erscheinungen mit der heutigen Zeit in Verbindung zu setzen und aktuell zu deuten. Seine Werke sind geprägt von einer intensiven Auseinandersetzung mit Geschichte, Wissenschaft und Religion, mit Politik und Gesellschaft sowie mit Kunstgeschichte und Philosophie.

Zur Eröffnung am Freitag 12. März 2010 um 19 Uhr sind Sie und Ihre Freunde herzlich eingeladen. Der Ausstellungskatalog erscheint Ende April 2010.

Thomas Zipp (WHITE REFORMATION CO-OP) MENS SANA IN CORPORE SANO 13 March - 13 June 2010

In his largest exhibition thus far, Thomas Zipp is transforming the Kunsthalle Fridericianum into a
“mental institution”. For the show (WHITE REFORMATION CO-OP) MENS SANA IN CORPORE SANO, Zipp combines sculptures, drawings and paintings with a comprehensive exhibition architecture to create a total installation.

The entire building is undergoing a transformation: The MUSEUM FRIDERICIANUM inscribed in golden lettering on the portal will be replaced by the words MENS SANA IN CORPORE SANO and the foyer will be turned into the lobby of a mental hospital. Encompassing a surreal path of architectural installations, the exhibition is devoted to issues around standard and deviation, social exclusion and the relationship between the individual and society. Dark corridors lined by white doors lead through a dense, associative network of paintings, drawings and sculptures. Some of these doors reveal spaces which convey a sense of the depths of the institution. Passing classrooms, treatment rooms, workshops and washrooms, the visitor arrives at the dining hall, at the executive suite, and even at a padded cell.

A gloomy aesthetics unfolds, triggering uncomfortable associations and thoughts of so-called sanatoria and reformatories of past times. Thomas Zipp (born in Heppenheim in 1966) knows how to relate developments in history and the humanities to the present age and to interpret them in a topical way. His works are marked by an intense engagement with history, science and religion, with politics and society and with art history and philosophy.

You and your friends are cordially invited to attend the opening of the exhibition on Friday, 12 March, 2010 at 7 p.m. An exhibition catalogue will appear at the end of April 2010.
