Idea of a Notebook, Reen Ré and

dOCUMENTA (13) will open in Kassel, Germany, on June 9, 2012, and will
issue all its publications in collaboration with Hatje Cantz Verlag.
documenta and Hatje Cantz Verlag will thus be working together for the
fourth time, after the 1992, 1997, and 2002 editions of the exhibition.
A range of dOCUMENTA (13) publications will appear over the next two
and a-half years, including the exhibition catalogue, artists’ books,
and a preliminary series of notebooks.
"Through innovative publications with Hatje Cantz, dOCUMENTA (13)
focuses on contemporary art practice while aiming to expand the
exhibition’s perspectives by exploring how knowledge, thinking, and
visuality are generated in and around art," explains artistic director
Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev.
"It is exciting to be integrated in the planning of the publications at
such an early stage and to experience the genesis of dOCUMENTA (13) at
first hand," comments Annette Kulenkampff, CEO of Hatje Cantz Verlag.

We are also pleased to announce that Dr. Bettina Funcke has been
appointed Head of Publications for dOCUMENTA (13). A New York-based
German writer and editor, Dr. Funcke has published numerous books and
essays on art and its production. After editing books at Dia Art
Foundation (2000-07), she was Senior Editor U.S. for Parkett (2007-10)
and is also a co-founder of The Leopard Press and the Continuous
Project group.
As a prelude to the 2012 exhibition, dOCUMENTA (13) and Hatje Cantz
will publish 100 Notes - 100 Thoughts, a series of notebooks. Note
taking encompasses witnessing, drawing, writing, and diagrammatic
thinking; it is speculative, manifests a preliminary moment, a passage,
and acts as a memory aid or trace. Consisting of contributions by
authors from a range of fields and disciplines, such as art, science,
philosophy and psychology, anthropology, economic- and political
theory, language- and literature studies, as well as poetry, 100 Notes
- 100 Thoughts constitutes a space of dOCUMENTA (13) that aims to
explore how thinking emerges and lies at the heart of the active
exercise of re-imagining the world. The Latin "documentum," from which
the plural noun "documenta" derives, means "lesson, lessons," and at
times it even indicates a "warning." In its cumulative nature, this
publication project generates a motion, a mental workshop, and embraces
many different vocabularies, forms of note taking, enunciations, words,
images, and logics. 100 Notes - 100 Thoughts is a continuous
articulation of the emphasis of dOCUMENTA (13) on the propositional,
underlining the nature of the various and flexible mental moves
inherent in such a project-to stretch the mind, to give it the
flexibility to generate space for the possible. Thoughts, unlike
statements, are always variations: this is the spirit in which these
notebooks are proposed.

Die dOCUMENTA (13) freut sich, den Hatje Cantz Verlag als Partner
für alle Publikationen gewonnen zu haben.
Ideen für ein Notizbuch, die
Künstler Reen Ré und Quack du Lac haben eine Seite aus "Sigmund Freud -
Das Lesebuch" im Geist der Reihe 100 Notizen - 100 Gedanken, die
dOCUMENTA (13) und der Hatje Cantz Verlag im Vorfeld der Ausstellung
herausgeben werden, neu gestaltet.

Die dOCUMENTA (13), die am 9.
Juni 2012 in Kassel eröffnet, wird alle Publikationen mit dem Hatje
Cantz Verlag veröffentlichen. Damit arbeiten die documenta und der
Hatje Cantz Verlag nach 1992, 1997 und 2002 bereits zum vierten Mal
zusammen. Für die dOCUMENTA (13) sind in den nächsten zweieinhalb
Jahren verschiedenste Publikationen geplant, darunter der
Ausstellungskatalog, Buchprojekte mit ausgewählten Künstlern und eine
Serie von Notizbüchern, die im Vorfeld der Ausstellung erscheinen wird.
"Schwerpunkt der dOCUMENTA (13) ist die zeitgenössische Kunstpraxis;
gleichzeitig wollen wir die Perspektiven der Schau erweitern und
untersuchen, wie Wissen, Ideen und Visualität in der Kunst und ihrem
Umfeld entstehen. Ein Ziel, das wir auch mit den innovativen
Publikationen, die wir gemeinsam mit Hatje Cantz planen, erreichen
möchten," erklärt die Künstlerische Leiterin Carolyn
Christov-Bakargiev.
"Es ist spannend, so frühzeitig in die Planungen der Publikationen mit
eingebunden zu sein und den Entstehungsprozess der dOCUMENTA (13)
hautnah mitzuerleben," kommentiert Annette Kulenkampff,
Geschäftsführerin des Hatje Cantz Verlages.
Bernd Leifeld, Geschäftsführer der documenta und Museum Fridericianum
Veranstaltungs-GmbH, meint zu der außergewöhnlich frühen Entscheidung:

Wir freuen uns auch Ihnen mitzuteilen, dass Dr. Bettina Funcke Leiterin
der Publikationsabteilung der dOCUMENTA (13) sein wird. Die deutsche
Autorin und Publizistin hat bereits zahlreiche Bücher und Essays über
Kunst und ihre Produktion herausgegeben. Funcke war von 2000 bis 2007
eine Redakteurin für die Publikationen der Dia Art Foundation und von
2007 bis 2010 leitende Redakteurin bei der US-amerikanischen Ausgabe
der Zeitschrift Parkett. Sie ist Mitbegründerin von The Leopard Press
und dem Continuous Project-Kollektiv. Bettina Funcke lebt in New York.
Schon im Vorfeld der Ausstellung geben dOCUMENTA (13) und der Hatje
Cantz Verlag ab Ende 2010 eine umfangreiche Serie von Notizbüchern
heraus. Wer sich Notizen macht, bezeugt, skizziert, schreibt und ordnet
seine Gedanken. Notizen sind spekulativ, markieren einen vorläufigen
Moment und funktionieren als Gedächtnisstütze oder Gedankenspur. Für
die Serie mit dem Titel 100 Notizen - 100 Gedanken werden Autoren aus
den verschiedensten Disziplinen - Kunst, Naturwissenschaft,
Philosophie, Psychologie, Anthropologie, Wirtschafts- und
Politikwissenschaft, Linguistik, Literaturwissenschaft und Lyrik -
Beiträge verfassen. Die Reihe eröffnet einen Forschungsraum rund um die
dOCUMENTA (13) und soll untersuchen, wie das Denken als Ausgangspunkt
für menschliche Vorstellungen von der Welt funktioniert. Documenta ist
eine Pluralform des lateinischen Worts "documentum", das auf Deutsch
"Lektion" und in besonderen Fällen sogar "Warnung" bedeuten kann. Der
kumulative Charakter des Buchprojekts verspricht Bewegung, es entsteht
ein geistiger Arbeitsraum mit den unterschiedlichsten Notizen zu
Worten, Ausdrucksformen, Bildern und Denkansätzen.
Die dOCUMENTA (13) betont das Unfertige in Aussagen und
Erklärungsmodellen. Die Reihe 100 Notizen - 100 Gedanken
veranschaulicht diesen Ansatzpunkt und zeigt, dass ein vielschichtiges
und bewegliches Denken zur Realisierung einer Schau wie der dOCUMENTA
(13) nötig ist. Der Verstand muss erweitert und flexibel genug gemacht
werden, um Raum zu schaffen für das Mögliche. Gedanken sind, anders als
Aussagen, immer Variationen. In diesem Sinne sind auch die Notizbücher
konzipiert.
