Brooklyn Museum Presents a Conversation with
Artist Shepard Fairey
One of the most influential street artists of
our time, Shepard Fairey will discuss his
career and work with Associate Curator of
Exhibitions Sharon Matt Atkins on Sunday,
April 25 at 3 p.m. at the Brooklyn Museum. A
book signing of Supply and Demand and
Obey: E Pluribus Venom will follow the
talk.
Shepard Fairey is the man behind OBEY
GIANT, the graphics that have changed the
way people see art and the urban landscape.
Fairey gained acclaim in the early 1990s for
his subversive street posters and stickers,
and has since circulated his iconic images
and logos around the globe through
guerilla-style placement and commercial
collaborations. His work deliberately blurs
the boundaries between the realms of fine and
commercial art, building off of the
precedents set by such artists as Andy Warhol
and Keith Haring. Often addressing social and
political issues, he became internationally
known for his Barack Obama HOPE poster
during the 2008 U.S. presidential election.
Fairey's artwork is included in many
collections among them the National Portrait
Gallery in Washington D.C. and the Museum of
Modern Art in New York. The first museum
survey of his artwork originated at the ICA
Boston in 2009 and traveled to The Andy
Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh and the
Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati.
Fairey's most recent work can be viewed this
May as, MAY DAY, a Solo Exhibition of
