The Jewish Museum opened on 17 March.

Following a very successful opening week it now runs a regular programme of public events.

The Margate Exodus

A contemporary re-telling of the Book of Exodus, the story of Moses and the search for the promised land, a story about identity and migration. Written and directed by filmmaker Penny Woolcock, Exodus was shot on location in Margate in Kent, with contemporary immigrants and asylum seekers in the UK. Followed by Q&A with the director, Penny Woolcok, chaired by Rabbi Pete Tobias of Liberal Judaism.

Matinee Film: Britain at Bay

A programme of rarely screened but rightly celebrated films from the BFI National Archive, vividly capturing the transition from optimism to high alert as the nation faced up to another momentous conflict. After the forward looking, progressive, idealism of the inter-war years, the government had to prepare its citizens for the worst as war with Germany shifted from distant threat to grim reality.

The Long March

Dir Robert van Alphen. The story of British-born Holocaust survivor, Leon Greenman OBE (1910-2008). Born in East London, Leon was living in the Netherlands with his family at the time of Nazi occupation. Leon’s wife and his two year old son, Barney, were killed in Auschwitz but Leon survived and was liberated in April 1945. He dedicated his life to speaking about the Holocaust as a warning against racism and prejudice.

Followed by a panel discussion.

Magical Mystery Storytelling: Tales of Time

These stories span many of the world’s time zones. Listen to tales about the Sun and Moon from Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist, Chinese and Native American traditions, and glimpse into the strange eccentric worlds of Julius Caesar and Pope Gregory (founders of our modern calendars).

How do we teach our children about the Holocaust?

What is the right age to start talking about the Holocaust? What messages do we pass on? And what impact will they have on our children’s moral development? Join us for a tour of the museum’s Holocaust Gallery followed by a panel discussion with psychotherapist and child refugee Ruth Barnett, Susy Stone, Head of Akiva Primary School and Fellow of Holocaust Education, Imperial War Museum and Marsha Shultz from Northwood Holocaust Memorial Day Events. Chaired by Judith Vandervelde, Holocaust Educator at the Jewish Museum.
