The Black Sun that Divides Heart and Soul
TAMARA GUION
Artist,
illustrator and designer Tamara Guion is inspired by vanatas and the
symbolism in that genre of 16th and 17th century still life painting from
Northern Europe, which conveys the transitory reality of life. Guion is also inspired by the old masters, religious icons, and the organic beauty of
nature. "I really love bones, because they represent a part of us that
exists long after our soul has moved on. The eye and the flower represent the
true window to the soul. The raven is the trickster that supplies us with the
challenges in our life, and the one beyond." states the artist.
Her pieces are created with as many as 10
layers of acrylics on birch plywood. She wet sands the surface to create
texture, then applies a translucent color glaze. Guion makes initial
sketches on vellum, then traces her finished drawings on the painting
using graphite transfer paper. She generally paints from dark to light
colors, using "dry brush" techniques to accentuate the painting's
texture.
Guion currently resides in Glendale, CA.
Guion's work is displayed April 3 through 25 in
the Sales Gallery at Grand
Central Art Center, 125 N. Broadway, Santa Ana, 714-567-7233.
