Her new book, A Decade of Negative Thinking: Essays on Art, Politics, and Daily Life, is available for sale and signing. Schor is a painter and writer, and she teaches at Parsons The New School for Design in New York. She has written frequently on issues of gender representation and feminist art history and her visual work balances political concerns with formalist and material passions. Exhibition: Substitute Teacher What is a substitute teacher? Typically, it is a person who fills in for the regular teacher when he or she is unavailable. For our purposes, a substitute teacher is any being, situation, or object that has the potential to impart knowledge. Substitute Teacher acts as an alternative syllabus for art-life learning. The installed artworks, the participating artists, the curators, the exhibition, and the institution can all be considered “substitute teachers” that encourage visitors to assess and challenge their own wealth of knowledge while embarking on new journeys of discovery. SANDLER HUDSON GALLERY– Event 1-2pm, FREE 1009-A Marietta Street, NW, www.sandlerhudson.com Artist’s talk with Kenn Kotara and Brett Smith. Kenn Kotara: Kenn Kotara will discuss his recent work at Sandler Hudson Gallery. This exhibition, entitled, "the in between is mine," includes mixed media works on shaped-canvas, suspended metal screens and pencil drawings on mylar. The rooftop space will feature an installation of clay and grass entitled, "Viaticus." Brett Smith: Atlanta-based artist and South-Africa native, Brett Smith will have conducted an interactive conceptual performance piece during the opening reception of his exhibition entitled, "15 Seconds." GALLERY— open 11-5,  FREE 662 11th St. NW www.getthisgallery.com Dawn Black’s drawings explore her own mania regarding “authentic” identity and of society’s at large by depicting scenes  of figures meticulously drawn in gouache, watercolor, and ink on paper. These figures are all “found”, being culled from the Internet and various periodicals. Black’s selection of real figures from the past and present and her arrangement of these figures into a single composition has the effect of condensing time, since many different time periods and histories are present in one of her images.  These figure’s ambiguous relationships then become intertwined with the viewer’s own beliefs regarding the authentic and the covert, the formidable and the meek and are intended to invoke the aura of a forgotten myth while exploring, satirizing, and critiquing current events and social conventions.  Image:  The Nightmare, 2010, Gouache, watercolor and ink on paper, 11x17 in. EMILY AMY GALLERY—open 11am - 5pm, FREE 1000 Marietta Street, Suite 208 www.emilyamygallery.com Michael Abrams: Return to Nature.  Growing up in Rensselear County in upstate New York would eventually have a profound influence on Michael Abrams’ artistic career, although he was not aware of it then.  The views out his childhood bedroom window of the Hudson River Valley became deeply engrained in his subconscious and have since become the predominant subject of his work.  The landscapes are loosely based on these Hudson River Valley vistas he remembers but are also partially fabricated in his imagination.  The combination makes for atmospheric, luminescent and ethereal paintings created from layering glazes from semi-transparent to opaque.  The result is a beautifully rendered edenic nature of Abrams’ own personal invention.  Image:  Michael Abrams,"Twilight on Mt.
