Metanoia is comprised of a series of 77 digitally-reworked photographs, which explore the alarming living conditions of developmentally disabled patients in the country. Nermine Hammam’s art thrives on its sense of transformation, her subject matter being as substantial and thickly layered as the creation of the images themselves. The intensity and depth of her work are pushed further in Metanoia, however. It is a project that has been finished for over a year, but not shown in Egypt until now. Metanoia, a term defined as profound and often spiritual conversion, captures Hammam’s personal encounter with some of the patients. Hammam spent three months in close contact – talking, eating, napping, walking, laughing – with her subjects. The resulting photographs mark a complete departure from her earlier work, “I spent more time not taking pictures, more time adjusting to the space,” she explains “I had to change the lens, get physically closer to my subject.” Formally, the series remain to be an artistic continuation of her previous work. Through her earlier exhibitions, such as Apotheosis (2005) and Palimpsest (2007), Hammam honed her process of digital manipulation, using it to interpret her alternative, and often-marginalized subject matter. She begins by scanning the original images, layering destroyed film and introducing painting and text, eventually re-processing the compositions into a new form. In Ashoura (2006) this artistic technique met head-on with what was critically reviewed as her most intense subject matter: documentation of the Shi’ia commemoration of Ashoura in Nabatieh southern Lebanon. The intensity of this dramatic and bloody recreation of the massacre of Hussein, grandson of the Prophet, is magnified by Hammam’s technical alterations. In Metanoia, text and Hammam’s trademark super-layering are noticeably absent. Even if she has completely altered some images, it is not necessarily evident to the untrained eye. The pictures retain a clearer, more austere quality, allowing the depth of the subject matter to reach through to the viewer. The inability to distinguish between reality and alteration parallels Hammam’s experience. Although she always becomes engrossed in the heavy content of her work, Metanoia resulted in an unexpected strong personal reaction. Hammam’s resulting perceptions of herself and humanity contributes to the more tender, more bitingly simple, images she shares with her viewers in the exhibition. “I realized that, as humans, we can be so incredibly cruel to one another. I watched the nurses, who abused their authority, treating the patients with complete insensitivity, totally disregarding their humanness…” Hammam, forced to question reality and our own subjectivity as humans, had to come to terms with the fact that extreme cruelty is an innate human characteristic: it can surface anywhere at any time. Now Metanoia, and its raw, yet painterly depiction of human suffering, infiltrates Cairo’s consciousness. The work poignantly reminds its audience that to truly address such suffering, we must first turn inward to confront our own conception of one another, a journey that is nothing if not eye-opening. Metanoia is on display at Townhouse Gallery from 18 April to 12 May 2010. Nermine Hammam (1967) obtained her BFA in film from NYU’s Tisch School of Arts. Hammam worked as a project assistant on Spike Lee’s Malcom X and with renowned director Youssef Chahine, and shortly following she switched mediums, taking up graphic design. Returning to Cairo in 1994, she trained formally in graphic design, before starting her own company, Equinox Designs.  Hammam’s work has been shown extensively in Egypt and abroad, most recently in 2009’s Photoquai at the musée de quais Branly, Paris and Cuenca, Ecuador’s X Biennal, (2009).
	معرض | ميتانويا | نرمين همام الافتتاح ١٨ ابريل ٢٠١٠ ، السابعة مساءاً، في المصنع المعرض مستمر حتى ١٢ مايو ٢٠١٠ تقيم الفنانة ومصممة الجرافيك نرمين همام معرضها الخامس فى جاليرى التاون هاوس. "ميتانويا"، وهى كلمة يونانية بمعنى "التحول الذهنى"، هى عنوان المعرض الذى يتكون من سلسلة من ٧٧ صورة فوتوغرافية تم تحويرها، وجميهعا تلقى الضوء على الأوضاع المقلقة التى يعيش فيها المصابون بإعاقات فى النمو فى مصر. تركز همام فى عملها على فكرة التحول، وهى عادة ما تختارلعملها مواضيع قوية ومتعددة الجوانب ثم تقوم بتحوير الصور لكى تؤكد على تلك الجوانب المتعددة للموضوع. ويتسم عملها فى "ميتانويا" بقدر أكبر من المعتاد من العمق والتكثيف. وقد تم اعداد الأعمال المعروضة فى "ميتانويا" من أكثر من سنة، ولكنها لم تعرض فى مصر قبلا. "ميتانويا" هى مصطلح يعبر عن حدوث تحول عميق وروحانى فى معظمه. وهذا المصطلح يعبر تماما عن اللقاءات التى تمت بين نرمين همام والمرضى. قضت همام ثلاثة شهور فى تواصل مباشر مع المرضى، حيث تحدثت معهم وشاركتهم الطعام ونامت على مقربة منهم وتنزهت بصحبتهم وضحكت معهم. والصور الفوتوغرافية الناتجة عن هذه التجرب تختلف تماما عن اعمالها السابقة. تقول همام: "قضيت وقتا طويلا بدون ان التقط صور، فقط أحاول أن أتأقلم على المكان. وتضيف: "كان على أن أغير العدسة التى أنظر من خلالها، وأن اقترب جسمانيا من الموضوع." رغم هذا، فإن تلك السلسلة تعتبر استكمالا فنيا لأعمال همام السابقة. فى معارضها السابقة، مثل "أبوثيوسيس" عام ٢٠٠٥ و"باليمست" عام ٢٠٠٧، طوّرت همام من قدراتها على التحوير الالكترونى للصور واختارت هذا الأسلوب لتقديم تفسيرات بديلة تتخطى على الأغلب موضوع الصورة الأصلى. تبدأ همام عملها بمسح ضوئى للصور الأصلية، ويلى ذلك تكوين طبقات اللوحة من الفيلم الأصلى والرسم والكلمات، وهو ما يعنى اعادة تشكيل التكوينات على نحو جديد. فى "عاشوراء" عام ٢٠٠٥ استخدمت همام هذا الاسلوب الفنى فى موضوع يعده النقاد موضوعها الأكثر الحاحا، وهو تسجيل احتفالات الشيعة بعاشوراء فى النبطية بجنوب لبنان. هذا التمثيل الدرامى والدموى لاستشهاد الحسين، حفيد الرسول محمد (صلعم)، تعاظم فى تأثيره بفضل التحويرات الفنية التى أجرتها همام. فى "ميتانويا" يختفى النص كما تختفى بصمة همام المعروفة، وهى تعدد طبقات الصورة. وحتى عندما تغير الفنانة بعض الصور تماما ، فقد يخفى ذلك على العين غير المدربة. تكتسب الصور فى هذا المعرض طابعا اوضح واقل تعقيدا، وهو ما يسمح للمشاهد بفهم البعد الأعمق للموضوع. ولو لاحظت شيئا من التداخل بين الحقيقة والخيال فإنك قد اقتربت من التجربة الفعلية التى مرت بها الفنانة. وبالرغم من أن همام تستغرق تماما فى موضوع عملها، فإن "ميتانويا" تترك لدى المشاهد انطباعا غير متوقع فى قوته. أما انطباعات همام عن نفسها وعن البشرية بشكل عام فتعطى مواضيعها نعومة تتداخل مع القسوة وتترك انطباعا دائما لدى المشاهد. "لاحظت أننا كبشر يمكننا أن نتصرف بقسوة غير متصورة مع بعضنا البعض. لقد شاهدت الممرضات وهن تسئن استخدام سلطاتهن وتعاملن المرضى بكثير من عدم الاحساس، متناسيات تماما انهم بشر مثلنا..." بينما تجد همام نفسسها مضرة للتشكك فى مظهر الأشياء وأيضا فى قدرة البشر على التصرف بموضوعية، فإن النتيجة التى تستخلصها هى إن القسوة المفرضة هى خاصية متأصلة فى البشر: خاصية يمكنها أن تظهر للعيان فى أى وقت وأى مكان. تقوم همام فى "ميتانويا" برسم صورة لا مداراة فيها للمعاناة الانسانية، وهى بذلك تكشف عن خبايا الضمير الانسانى فى مدينة القاهرة. هذا العمل به من الصراحة المؤلمة ما يذكر المشاهدين بأن المرء لا يمكن أن يواجه ذلك النوع من المعاناة بدون أن يواجه أولا طريقة فهمه للآخرين – وهى رحلة تتطلب من المرء أن يفتح أعينه على حقائق صعبة فى تقبلها. يمكن مشاهدة "ميتانويا" فى جاليرى التاون هاوس من ١٨ ابريل إلى ١٢ مايو ٢٠١٠. حصلت نرمين همام (١٩٦٧) على شهادة البكالوريوس فى الفنون الجميلة من كلية "تيش" للفنون بجامعة نيويورك. عملت مساعدة انتاج فى فيلم "مالكوم إكس" من اخراج "سبايك لى" كما عملت مع المخرج المعروف يوسف شاهين، وبعدها بوقت قصير قامت بتغيير مجال عملها الفنى بالتحول إلى التصميم الجرافيكى. عادت همام إلى القاهرة فى ١٩٩٤ لتدرس التصميم الجرافيكى بشكل منتظم قبل أن تكون شركتها الخاصة تحت اسم "اكوينوكس ديزانز". عرضت أعمال همام على نطاق واسع فى مصر والخارج، ومنها مشاركتها فى معرض "فوتوكى" فى متحف "كيه برانلى" فى باريس فى ٢٠٠٩ وفى بيينالى اكوادور العاشر فى كوينسا فى نفس العام. Over the course of their short and sweet life, the 'Art and Freedom' group, as they were known, prepared just five exhibitions and published two editions of a magazine, ‘La Part du Sable.’ It is difficult to say what led to their premature end. What we do know is that the Egyptian Surrealists spent much of this short period eloquently describing their own demise: “LIKE A KNIFE WITHOUT A BLADE, THAT HAS LOST ITS HANDLE” Still, on December 22, 1938 when this group of precocious painters, poets, journalists, and lawyers published their manifesto, “Vive l’Art Dégénéré,” they were brimming with optimism. With their stand against order, beauty and logic, the 'Art and Freedom' group shook up a community steeped in academicism and the picturesque with their particular version of modernism. Herein was a remarkable moment when Surrealism in an odd alliance with Marxism met the Orient. “FEMALE WORKERS OF ALL LANDS, BE BEAUTIFUL.” they proclaimed… The 6th 'Art and Freedom show' will take place on the first floor of the Townhouse Gallery after a 60-year hiatus. The exhibition will coincide with the publication of the surrealist magazine 'La Part du Sable,'  which breathed its last breath after its second issue in 1941. In this way, the third issue, planned around the theme of violence but never realized, will finally see the light of day. These events will take place without the consultation of any founding members—all of whom are deceased. Anyone with information about the dreams and works of the original protagonists—Georges Henein, Ramses Younane, Fouad Kamel, and Kamal Al Tilmisani— your contributions are welcome. True to their spirit, the exhibition will run backwards, opening on the closing night: May 12th, 2010. فاعلية في الدور الأول أدم برومبرج و أوليفر شانارن ١٨ ابريل – ١٢ مايو "لا مفر من التثاؤب عندما يرون صورتهم الشخصية!" أنت مدعو لمناسبة خاصة يتم فيها احياء الحركة السيريالية المصرية على مدى حياتها القصيرة والممتعة، فإن جماعة "الفن والحرية"، كما كانت تعرف، أعدت فقط خمس معارض كما نشرت عددين من مجلة "من جانب الرمل". من الصعب أن يفهم المرء الأسباب التى قادت إلى نهايتهم السريعة. ولكن ما نعلمه هو أن السيرياليين المصريين قضوا أكثر تلك الفترة القصيرة من حياتهم وهم يتحدثون بطلاقة عن لحظة النهاية: "كأنها مدية بلا نصل قد فقدت مقبضها" ولكن فى ٢٢ ديسمبر ١٩٣٨، عندما نشرت تلك المجموعة من الرسامين والشعراء والصحفيين والمحامين المانيفستو الخاص بهم، والذى أسموه "تحية للفن المتدهور"، فإنهم كانوا مفعمين بالأمل. بفضل موقفهم المناهض للنظام والجمال والمنطق، فإن جماعة "الفن والحرية" هزوا دعائم مجتمع كان غارقا فى الاتجاهات الأكاديمية و مولعا باللوحات الجميلة، وهى أشياء قاموا بتحديها من خلال تفسيراتهم الخاصة للحداثة. وجاءت لحظة لا تنسى عندما التقت السيريالية، وهى غارقة فى تحالف غريب مع الماركسية، بالشرق. "النساء العاملات فى كل مكان، كن جميلات"، هكذا جاء النداء الذى اطلقوه. بعد فترة توقف دامت ستين عاما، يقام المعرض السادس "للفن والحرية" فى الدور الأول من جاليرى التاون هاوس. يتزامن المعرض مع نشر عدد جديد من المجلة السيرالية "من جانب الرمل" التى اخرجت انفاسها الأخيرة بعد صدور العدد الثانى منها سنة١٩٤١. وهكذا فإن العدد الثالث، والذى تم اعداده عن موضوع العنف ولكنه لم يستكمل، سوف يخرج إلى النور فى نهاية المطاف . هذه الأحداث سوف تقع بدون استشارة أى من الأعضاء المؤسسين – حيث قد توفوا جميعا. أى شخص لديه معلومات حول احلام وأعمال الأعضاء الأصليين – جورج حنين، رمسيس يونان، فؤاد كامل، وكامل التلمسانى – سوف نرحب بأى مساهمة يقدمها لنا. فى ايماءة وفاء إلى روح عملهم، فإن المعرض سوف يقام بالعكس، حيث يتم افتتاحه فى ليلة الاختتام، ١٢ مايو ٢٠١٠.
