SHAKE HANDS WITH CONCEPTUAL ART
The New Gallery launches initiative to try to de-mystify
contemporary art
Calgary, April 22, 2010 - The New Gallery (TNG) is pleased to
announce the first installment of its Wine with Art Lecture Series
Friday, April 30, 2010 at 4 PM. Each monthly event will feature
a casual presentation on contemporary art, accompanied by a selection
of delicious hors d’oeuvres courtesy of The Bistro at Art Central, and
a tasting of boutique wine compliments of The Cellar and Summit Fine
Wines. The Wine with Art Lecture Series aims to promote
contemporary art to broader audiences within Calgary; each presentation
will engage the public in the Gallery’s activities and provide new
access points to an understanding and appreciation of contemporary
visual art. With these events running from 4 - 6 PM on the last Friday
of each month, the Gallery hopes to engage the downtown after-work
crowd who may be interested in contemporary art and culture at large.
TNG will also feature the lecture series online and as a monthly
podcast.
Jane McQuitty, the premier presenter, will discuss TNG’s current
exhibition, Horse and Sparrow by Vancouver artists Richard
Ibghy and Marilou Lemmens. The talk will survey the form and content of
works of the exhibition, suggesting answers to the question of how such
an austere approach to form might be appreciated as a feat of artistic
and intellectual skill. Jane McQuitty obtained her BFA from ACAD and an
MFA from University of Calgary. She currently teaches Art Appreciation
III (Modernism) in Extended Studies at University of Calgary, and is an
active board member of the Untitled Art Society.
On Thursday April 30, The Bistro at Art Central will be serving
bruschetta, a beef & salmon mousse remoulade and chicken skewers
with spicy satay to compliment the selected wines, Periquita from
Portugal, and Pure Evil, an Australian Chardonnay.
The New Gallery (TNG) is Calgary’s original artist-run centre.
Since 1975 TNG has presented the work of over a thousand local,
national and international artists, and it remains a responsive public
forum for the presentation of contemporary art. TNG is grateful for the
ongoing support of its members, Calgary Arts Development, the Alberta
Foundation for the Arts and The Canada Council for the Arts. www.thenewgallery.org
