HUGO TILLMAN: DAYDREAMS OF MINE, a mesmerizing exhibition including a series of surreal color photographs will be on view at the Nohra Haime Gallery booth No. 7-7100 at NEXT.
Tillman is known for his eccentric photographs directed by dreams, magic, and mundane reality. With uncanny scenes that are in part carefully crafted and in part spontaneous moments of everyday life, Tillman strives to communicate through metaphors and visual stories.
In his latest work, Tillman turns his lens on Cuba. For a period of six days, the artist produced a series of interventions - as the photographer himself likes to define them - in Havana in collaboration with the government. Through photographs and film stills, daily actions such as praying, resting, grocery shopping, driving, conversing, and observing are transformed into whimsical theatrical spectacle. A hint of hope and buoyancy is felt in the clever juxtaposition of ordinary and extraordinary elements. The ambiguous settings and the psychedelic tonal hues give the images a picturesque quality reinforcing the unique enchantment of Cuba.
As he captures scenes that illustrate, in his own words, "my little perspective" of this city of contrasts, Tillman presents the viewer with surreal images that document the collective reality, eccentricities and contradictions of the Caribbean island.
Born in London in 1973, Tillman moved to New York and received a Masters of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute in 2004. His photographs have been exhibited in solo exhibitions at the Guangzhou Museum of Art, China; The Today Art Museum, Beijing; The Birmingham Art Gallery, United Kingdom; Elementa Gallery, Dubai; F2 Gallery, Beijing; DF2 Gallery, Los Angeles, P.S.1, New York, among others. Tillman has also participated in a number of international exhibitions, such as the Guangzhou Photo Biennale (2009), Guandong, China; Shanghai Biennale, Moca (2006), Shanghai, China; and Berlin Biennale (2000), Berlin, Germany. He is currently a candidate for a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from Oxford University, London.
Tillman returns to Chicago after being part of the fall 2009 Columbia College campus wide initiative titled Focus: China, where he presented his series Film Stills of the Mind.
