"Is it not the ultimate meaning of the beautiful to be essential, functional, justified, truthful?"
- Designer Kaj Franck (1911-1989)
Finnish design has been globally renowned for its simplicity,
functionality and beauty. These qualities have directly derived from a
specific context and history. However, the world is in constant change
and Finland has positioned itself at the forefront of the most
innovative and radical evolution. How does the new Finnish design
respond to these changes?
This lecture presents the story behind the exhibition STRAIGHTFORWARD: New Finnish Design (www.straightforward-design.net)
which will be presented in New York Design Week. Curators Paula Bello
and Teemu Oksanen sought to enquire at how those traditional values
that shaped the famed Finnish Design are being reinterpreted by new
generations. Their goal is to explore how designers and companies keep
the legacy of Finnish Design while moving forward.
