Have a Poppin' Good Time - Creating Pop Art

Instructor Angela Cook graduated with a degree in art education and a minor in art history from the University of Houston. She was an art teacher for the Spring Branch Independent School District for several years and is currently a teaching artist for Art League Houston's ArtBound! program, which has her in residency at Julius Dodson Elementary.

Camp IV : ( KS-4 )

June 28 - July 2, (ages 9 to 11)
Campers will spend the week exploring large scale drawing with a special focus on creating illusion. Campers will make a large-scale drawing of a magical, dreamlike place which will encompass an entire room. They will learn about exaggerated proportion, tromphe l'oeil (the art of illusion), and other fantastic drawing techniques. Most of all they will have a blast learning about drawing in a "big way."

Instructor Emily Sloan earned a M.F.A. in sculpture and interdisciplinary arts from the University of Houston. Emily is a drawing instructor and model lab coordinator at Art League Houston. This semester she is also implementing a drawing residency for Art League Houston's Artbound! program at Cage Elementary. Emily has taught students of all ages.

Strike A Poise - Movement in Art
July 12 - 16, (ages 5 to 8)
This camp is especially good for active children. Campers will explore how movement is captured in paintings, photographs, and sketches. Campers will create their own action poises, which they will learn how to transform into beautiful line drawings and paintings. From movement to the page, campers will experience firsthand how motion can be captured in art.

Instructor: Angela Cook (see bio for Camp III)

Camp VII : ( KS-7 )
All Aboard For Pattern Play - Patterns in Art Around the World

July 19 - July 23, (ages 5 to 8)
Campers will take a virtual trip to other countries to learn how lines, shapes, and colors come together to make beautiful patterns. Campers may find themselves making an aboriginal dot painting, designing a pattern for an African kente cloth, or creating designs reminiscent of the Russian artist Kandinsky. This artistic journey is full of possibilities!

Instructor: Kimberley Taylor (see bio for Camp V)

Camp VIII : ( KS-8 )
Houston, We Have A Wonderland! - Creating a Site-Specific Work of Art
July 26 - July 30, (ages 9 to 11)
Under the direction of artist Emily Sloan, campers will create a site specific "wonder-inspired" piece of art. The piece will be created indoors during the camp. On the last day of camp, it will be installed in Art League Houston's outdoor sculpture garden, where it will remain on display for a month. Campers will also have art works to take home with them at the conclusion of the camp.

Instructor Emily Sloan has created a number of site specific art works across the state of Texas. Sloan created the Burning House installation on Texas highway 59N, in Polk County, the Sabine Street Bridge Lamp at the City of Houston's Buffalo Bayou Art Park, and two site-specific projects featured at the Texas State Fair in Dallas.
