WHEN:  Thursday, May 27th, 2010, 6:30 PM
FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

WHY:  The Bronowski Art&Science Forum is named to honor Jacob Bronowski, (January 18, 1908 - August 22, 1974) was a British mathematician, biologist, humanist and an associate director of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies from 1964. He was an individual who embraced the importance of creativity and elegance in human intellectual activity.

“He was an extraordinarily whole person and his thinking had a consistency unusual in these times. He was a thinking man, an endangered species. All his life he treated art and science as the same expression of the human imagination.”  Rita Bronowski

DISCUSSION TOPICS:

The Bronowski Art&Science Forum is format for intellectual discourse on the commonalities of Art and of Science.  During the past eleven years, this Forum has hosted over 110 presentations.  Presenters are exemplary leaders in the arts and in the sciences, renowned artists, architects and scientists; outstanding  individuals who by their accomplishments are leaders in their endeavors.  The Forum has continued the tradition set in motion by Jonas Salk and Jacob Bronowski, examining the commonalities of these ‘two cultures’: creativity, elegance and the sublime. In a very modest way, The Forum pays homage to the legacy of Jacob Bronowski.

An evening of artist meets scientist: The Artist, Roman De Salvo with the Neuroscientist, Dr. Ramachandran.  An evening of unrehearsed and unscripted conversation. What are the common denominators that exist between artist and neuroscientist?
Topics will emerge as the evening progresses.  Questions will unfold from the participants as well as questions submitted from the attendees.  An evening for inquisitive minds.

Dr. Ramachandran is the director of UCSD's Center for Brain and Cognition.
His major areas of research are: cognitive neuroscience, behavioral neurology - the study of cognitive and perceptual deficits in human neurological patients, neural plasticity and "phantom limbs", stroke rehabilitation, human visual perception/cognition, and visual psychophysics.  He obtained an M.D. at Stanley Medical College in Madras, India, a PhD. from Trinity College, University of Cambridge.  He has been called “The Marco Polo of Neuroscience” by Richard Dawkins.  Newsweek magazine named him a member of “The Century Club”, one of the 100 most prominent people to watch in the 21st century.   Rama brilliantly examines the interface of science and humanities.

Roman de Salvo is a contemporary American conceptual artist whose sculpture and installations utilize everyday objects and materials in inventive and unexpected ways. De Salvo's work combines his interest in craft, technology, language, and materials with ever present attributes of wit and play.  Roman received a MFA from UCSD.  He has shown professionally throughout the United States and in Europe, including the Whitney Biennial, 2000, Musee d’Art, Givemy, 2000, Museum of Contemporary Art, SD 1996, 2001, 2006, The California Biennial 2002, Seattle Art Museum, 2003, The Public Art Fund, NYC, 2003 and the Nevada Museum of Art, 2004.
His most recent show at The Quint gallery,“Split, Splice, Splay, Display” was mentioned as one of San Diego’s better art shows of 2009 by Robert Pincus of The Union Tribune.
