with Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin

Over the course of three weeks we will explore Surrealism, a social movement that began in the 1920's and arrived in Egypt in 1938.

In each session we will explore free association, dream analysis and the hidden unconscious using techniques such as automatic drawing and collage.

على مدى ثلاثة أسابيع سوف نقوم باستكشاف السوريالية، وهى تلك الحركة الاجتماعية التى ظهرت فى العشرينات من القرن الماضى ووصلت إلى مصر عام ١٩٣٨.

وفى كل جلسة عمل سوف نستكشف تداعى الأفكار وتحليل الأحلام وخبايا اللاوعى وذلك باستخدام تقنيات منها الرسم التلقائى والكولاج

DOOMED TO YAWN IN FRONT OF IT’S OWN IMAGE

Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin invite you to a special exhumation of the Egyptian Surrealist movement.

Over the course of their short and sweet life, the 'Art and Freedom' group, as they were known, prepared just five exhibitions and published two editions of a magazine, ‘La Part du Sable.’

It is difficult to say what led to their premature end. What we do know is that the Egyptian Surrealists spent much of this short period eloquently describing their own demise:

“LIKE A KNIFE WITHOUT A BLADE, THAT HAS LOST ITS HANDLE”

Still, on December 22, 1938 when this group of precocious painters, poets, journalists, and lawyers published their manifesto, “Vive l’Art Dégénéré,” they were brimming with optimism.

With their stand against order, beauty and logic, the 'Art and Freedom' group shook up a community steeped in academicism and the picturesque with their particular version of modernism. Herein was a remarkable moment when Surrealism in an odd alliance with Marxism met the Orient.

“WOMEN WORKERS OF ALL LANDS, BE BEAUTIFUL.” they proclaimed…

The 6th 'Art and Freedom show' will take place on the first floor of the Townhouse Gallery after a 60-year hiatus.

The exhibition will coincide with the publication of the surrealist magazine 'La Part du Sable,' which breathed its last breath after its second issue in 1941. In this way, the third issue, planned around the theme of violence but never realized, will finally see the light of day.

These events will take place without the consultation of any founding members—all of whom are deceased.

Anyone with information about the dreams and works of the original protagonists—Georges Henein, Ramses Younane, Fouad Kamel, and Kamal Al Tilmisani— your contributions are welcome.

True to their spirit, the exhibition will run backwards, opening on the closing night: May 12^th, 2010.

افتتاح معرض ل
"أدم برومبرج و أوليفر شانارن"

لا مفر من التثاؤب ... عندما يرون صورتهم الشخصية!

أدم برومبرج و أوليفر شانارن يدعونكم لمناسبة خاصة يتم فيها احياء الحركة السيريالية المصرية

على مدى حياتها القصيرة والممتعة، فإن جماعة "الفن والحرية"، كما كانت تعرف، أعدت فقط خمس معارض كما نشرت عددين من مجلة "من جانب الرمل".

من الصعب أن يفهم المرء الأسباب التى قادت إلى نهايتهم السريعة. ولكن ما نعلمه هو أن السيرياليين المصريين قضوا أكثر تلك الفترة القصيرة من حياتهم وهم يتحدثون بطلاقة عن لحظة النهاية:

"كأنها مدية بلا نصل قد فقدت مقبضها"

ولكن فى ٢٢ ديسمبر ١٩٣٨، عندما نشرت تلك المجموعة من الرسامين والشعراء والصحفيين والمحامين المانيفستو الخاص بهم، والذى أسموه "تحية للفن المتدهور"، فإنهم كانوا مفعمين بالأمل.

بفضل موقفهم المناهض للنظام والجمال والمنطق، فإن جماعة "الفن والحرية" هزوا دعائم مجتمع كان غارقا فى الاتجاهات الأكاديمية و مولعا باللوحات الجميلة، وهى أشياء قاموا بتحديها من خلال تفسيراتهم الخاصة للحداثة. وجاءت لحظة لا تنسى عندما التقت السيريالية، وهى غارقة فى تحالف غريب مع الماركسية، بالشرق.

"النساء العاملات فى كل مكان، كن جميلات"، هكذا جاء النداء الذى اطلقوه.

بعد فترة توقف دامت ستين عاما، يقام المعرض السادس "للفن والحرية" فى الدور الأول من جاليرى التاونهاوس.

يتزامن المعرض مع نشر عدد جديد من المجلة السيرالية "من جانب الرمل" التى اخرجت انفاسها الأخيرة بعد صدور العدد الثانى منها سنة١٩٤١. وهكذا فإن العدد الثالث، والذى تم اعداده عن موضوع العنف ولكنه لم يستكمل، سوف يخرج إلى النور فى نهاية المطاف .

هذه الأحداث سوف تقع بدون استشارة أى من الأعضاء المؤسسين – حيث قد توفوا جميعا.

أى شخص لديه معلومات حول احلام وأعمال الأعضاء الأصليين – جورج حنين، رمسيس يونان، فؤاد كامل، وكامل التلمسانى – سوف نرحب بأى مساهمة يقدمها لنا.

فى ايماءة وفاء إلى روح عملهم، فإن المعرض سوف يقام بالعكس، حيث يتم افتتاحه فى ليلة الاختتام، ١٢ مايو ٢٠١٠.

Broomberg and Chanarin have been collaborating for over a decade. They are currently Artists in Residence at Townhouse Gallery and will be presenting works in progress from their current exhibition Cliches in the first floor gallery as well as a number of previous projects including Chicago-which is currently on show at the Beirut Art Centre- and which documents an urban training camp for the Israeli Defense Force.

حديث للفنانان أدم برومبرج و أوليفر شانارن

قام برومبرج وشانارين بالتعاون على مدار العشر سنوات الماضية. وهما حاليا فنانان مقيمان مع جاليرى التاونهاوس وسوف يقدمان أعمالا غير مكتملة من معرضهما الحالى "كليشيه" وذلك فى الدور الأول من الجاليرى، وذلك إلى جانب عدد من المشروعات السابقة ومنها "شيكاغو" الذى يعرض حاليا فى مركز بيروت للفنون والذى يصور معسكرا لتدريب الجيش الاسرائيلى فى مدينة ما.

HaRaKa invites Roby for this month’s screening, featuring a few of his dance films. He is known to be one of the few artists experimenting with movement and choreography frequently in his videos and films in Egypt, having collaborated with several choreographers himself (Laurence Rondoni, Adham Hafez, Germana Civera…etc) while producing his movement/image work. In the film Euphoria, Roby explores the transient shared moments in dance, the “floating” images and body parts, notions of freezing time and capturing what might be the essence of choreography, the Euphoria of Dance.

Biography
Ahmed El Sayed (AKA: Roby) is a multidisciplinary artist, working in the fields of Performance, Installation, Interventions and Film. His work has been presented widely in Egypt, the Arab Speaking World and in Europe. He established several platforms for Performance; “Street Performance Platform in Geneva”, “Sabeel Platform” in Cairo, and several intervention series, including “Exotic Cameraman” which was presented in Egypt, India, Spain, Germany. Ahmed Roby studied Theatre at the Faculty of Arts- Helwan University, in Egypt, and specialized in Drama and Criticism. Currently, he is developing “performative machines” for multimedia performances.

HaRaKa is a Research and Development project for Dance, Movement and Performance. The Films and Talks Program takes place on monthly basis, curated by HaRaKa, and supported by the Townhouse Gallery

فيلم يوفوريا – نشوة

يدعو برنامج "حَ رَكَ" الفنان أحمد السيد "روبي" هذا الشهر لعرض عددا من أفلام الرقص التى قام بخلقها، تصويرا و أداءً. أحمد السيد معروف انه من القِلة من الفنانين الذين يمارسون تجربة تصميم الحركة و أدائها في الفيديو والأفلام في مصر و المنطقة العربية ، متعاونا في انتاج الصورة و الحركة مع عدد من مصممي الرقص مثل: (لورانس روندونى ، أدهم حافظ ، خيرمانا سيفيرا... الخ).

في فيلم "يوفوريا" ، يقوم روبي باستكشاف اللحظات الضئيلة المخفية في ثنايا الرقصات: اللحظات التي تبدو فيها الصور و الأجسام عائمة في الفراغ، و يقدم أيضا مفهوم تجميد الزمن و التقاط ما قد يكون مختفيا مما قد يعطي الرقصة عبيرها و شخصيتها المتفردة .. انه يقدم يوفوريا (=نشوة) الرقص.

سيرة ذاتية:
احمد السيد (المعروف أيضا باسم : روبي) هو فنان متعدد التخصصات ، والعمل في مجالات الأداء والتركيب والتدخلات والسينما. وقد عرضت أعماله على نطاق واسع في مصر والعالم العربي و في أوروبا. أقام العديد من المشروعات الأدائية ، التي تقدم فن "الأداء" بشكل خاص و منها "شارع الأداء" في جنيف بسويسرا، "سبيل" في القاهرة ، وعدد من السلاسل من فن "التداخل"، بما في ذلك "المصور الغريب" الذي قدم في مصر والهند واسبانيا والمانيا. درس أحمد روبي المسرح في كلية الفنون في جامعة حلوان في مصر و تخصص في الدراما و النقد.

و يعمل حاليا على تطوير مشروعه "آلات مؤدية" و ذلك لتقديمه بعد ذلك الى مشروعات الاداء ذات الوسائط المتعددة
