One definition of quality: "adherence to a standard set of
specifications." The artist must avoid perfection. Going after
perfection may be admirable but sometimes it's better to take
what you get along the way. This is the ultimate acknowledgment
of a higher power. God lives in our imperfections.
Good defect is good effect.
Don't "finish" a passage. Resolve it.
Rule of composition-cut the figure the opposite way in
which you would a chicken: never at the joint.
Where straight lines intersect is where your drawing occurs.
Keep your palette organized. The whole painting happens on
the palette!
As an artist you are under no obligation to explain or justify
what you are painting. You are here to paint, to express in paint
who you are. Describe if you must but let's not insult the viewer
with too much unnecessary detail or explanation.
Preciousness has no place in the process of painting. Painting
is for warriors, not for the faint of heart.
An artist must learn how to use his tools like a surgeon, with
the powerful combination of precision and urgency.
There are no concave shapes, only convex shapes. Look for
convex shapes in all organic forms. All living things grow
outward, even from the smallest cell to the most complex human
forms. If it seems concave, look again. It is undoubtedly a
combination of several convex shapes in convergence.
