Art News:

Children's museum

Dear Artsnews,

The Power of Positive Painting workshop for kids at the Children's Museum of the Lowcountry culminated with some impressive portraits (above) and the kids walking away with a deeper knowlege of observational drawing and form based painting.  Here, as well as with my work as AIR in North Charleston, I've been presenting art as a set of skills that can be learned and practiced, like reading, math or music, while being very careful never to negate the creative aspects of the process.  In fact, we've lately been using the results of contour drawing as a springboard to imaginative play, turning a drawing of a hand into a mountain landscape, etc.  I always say, "art is what happens while you're trying to do something else."  The object is to keep the left brain busy with structure so the right brain is free to do his/her job.

I recently had the opportunity to channel Piccasso at an event at the Gibbes Museum, which was a lot of fun.  I produced about 35 portraits drawn onto cocktail napkins, chiding guests not to wipe their face with them.

This is your last chance to sign up for my Portrait Workshop in Summerville this Monday and Tuesday, 9-4 both days.  I've updated my Workshops page with lots of opportunities for free demos and workshops for kids (and adults) of all ages.

The WestOf newspaper did a nice article featuring some of my teaching philosopy last week, FYI.  If you are a member of the media looking for fresh ideas visit a new page on my website outlining some of my upcoming activites and what I might be able to offer your readers.

I've put up a page on my website with some of the amazing photos taken during my time as Artist in Residence in Noth Charleston.  I watch the faces of these kids open as they discover an entirely new part of their brain and begin to draw with sophistication and specificity, truly seeing possibly for the first time in their lives. I see them as taking control of their world in some small yet profound way. I've encouraged them to imagine a life filled with possibility, to follow their passions and not just accept their lot in life as if it were somehow real. I'm on a mission here.

The Portrait Painting from a live model class will be starting up again very soon on Tuesdays at my West Ashley studio in Charleston. I have a couple spots left, if you'd like to join the fun.  Call me ASAP to register: 843-486-3161. The Power of Positive Painting class continues on Wednesdays, 10am-12:30.  Also, I have added a couple dates for future Power of Positive Painting workshops. Here's a complete listing of all ongoing classes and upcoming workshopsLet me know if you'd like to audit a class to see if it's right for you. Private instruction and career coaching is available for those serious about launching their career and/or developing your own voice as an artist. Read this great article about The Power of Positive Painting in Charlie Magazine.
Let me know if you are thinking about joining a class.  Come Learn what you don't know you don't know.

Would you like me to come speak at your organization, perhaps present a demo or workshop?  Want to learn to paint a portrait without leaving your studio?  For information on my portrait painting DVDs.

Here's your latest installment of "Point of Art." If you find these tips useful, why don't you

One definition of quality: "adherence to a standard set of
specifications." The artist must avoid perfection. Going after
perfection may be admirable but sometimes it's better to take
what you get along the way. This is the ultimate acknowledgment
of a higher power. God lives in our imperfections.

Good defect is good effect.
Don't "finish" a passage. Resolve it.
Rule of composition-cut the figure the opposite way in
which you would a chicken: never at the joint.
Where straight lines intersect is where your drawing occurs.
Keep your palette organized. The whole painting happens on
the palette!
As an artist you are under no obligation to explain or justify
what you are painting. You are here to paint, to express in paint
who you are. Describe if you must but let's not insult the viewer
with too much unnecessary detail or explanation.
Preciousness has no place in the process of painting. Painting
is for warriors, not for the faint of heart.
An artist must learn how to use his tools like a surgeon, with
the powerful combination of precision and urgency.
There are no concave shapes, only convex shapes. Look for
convex shapes in all organic forms. All living things grow
outward, even from the smallest cell to the most complex human
forms. If it seems concave, look again. It is undoubtedly a
combination of several convex shapes in convergence.
