"Fierce Beauty : The Art of Linda Vallejo, a Forty-Year Retrospective"
2010-05-15 until 2010-07-31
Plaza de la Raza
Los Angeles, CA, USA United States of America

Plaza de la Raza is pleased to announce a major retrospective of Linda Vallejo's wide-ranging career from May 15 – July 31, 2010. Vallejo is a pioneer in the Los Angeles art scene and has exhibited locally and internationally. The exhibit titled Fierce Beauty: The Art of Linda Vallejo, a Forty-Year Retrospective has been curated by Betty Ann Brown and features over forty artworks tracing Vallejo’s remarkable trajectory from her early conceptually-rooted works to recent sculptures and paintings exploring "electric realism." Linda Vallejo has been a member at absolutearts.com since 2001.

This landmark exhibit is presented by Plaza de la Raza Cultural Center for the Arts & Education in conjunction with their 40th Year Anniversary. The ten-week retrospective at Plaza de la Raza’s Boathouse Gallery runs May 15 – July 31, 2010. The opening public reception is Saturday, May 15 from 2:00 p.m – 6:00 p.m. "We are excited and pleased to host this exhibit of an important artist who has given so much to the community over the years. She is a role model and unsung heroine in many respects." said Rose Cano, Executive Director of Plaza de la Raza.

Curator Betty Ann Brown, a Professor of Art History at California State University Northridge writes, "Beautiful and difficult, poetic and troubling, seductive and confronting, Linda Vallejo’s artworks function as powerful gifts…Vallejo’s oeuvre is remarkably diverse. Beginning her art career with training as a printmaker, she soon transgressed the traditional limits of that medium..." Vallejo received her BA in Fine Arts from Whittier College, completed undergraduate studies in lithography from the University of Madrid, Spain and received a Master of Fine Arts from Cal State University, Long Beach. A select list of exhibits includes: the Natural History Museum, Craft and Folk Art Museum, Carnegie Art Museum, Frazier Museum, Louisville, Kentucky, Santa Monica Museum, Hammer Museum, Laguna Art Museum, Art Museum of South Texas, Anchorage Museum of History and Art, The Bronx Museum, Museum of Modern Art New York, San Antonio Museum, Mexico City Modern Art Museum and others. She is represented by Galerie Anaïs in Santa Monica, CA.
