The Town Hall Galleries are pleased to present the second in a double bill of exhibitions that demonstrate different responses to the formal and conceptual exploration of landscape.

“I respond to the huge variety found in our landscape.  A particular tree against a particular sky.  A cornfield bright under the sun.  Relics of buildings vulnerable to the passing of time. I draw in situ, working to combine intimate detail with the vast movement of light between land and sky.

From these drawings I distil the essence of the subject into small oil paintings.  They have a life of their own where the “progress” and destruction of man no longer threatens..”

          Tory Lawrence, March 2010

Tory Lawrence’s body of paintings, Ancient Land incites excitement and intensity to the subject of landscape, which is so often tediously, photographically or banally rendered. This quality is realised by Lawrence’s depth and sensitivity to details - the precise lie of the land, a particular drift of a cloud, the strange mystery of a relic of a church.

The lavish use of oil paint enlivens the image surface and we enjoy the sense of being there: walking the plough, climbing the hillside, crunching the snow, or encountering Framlingham Castle as if for the first time under constantly changing skies. Through a fresh and original vision Lawrence portrays a sense of history as it acts upon the present to combine memory, imagination and true observation.

Catalogue available from Gallery 2, £5. Works are for sale.
