The BECA Foundation is pleased to present the ‘FUTUREFORWARD’ exhibition of new art + new design at BECA ICAD (International Center for Art + Design), 527 St. Joseph Street, New Orleans, LA 70130 - across from the Contemporary Arts Center through May 29, 2010. The exhibition highlights works that reveal an idea, message, contribution, warning or solution that if carried forward may profoundly impact the future – be it positively or negatively.

Dear Friends,

The timing and poignancy of this particular exhibition opening the same weekend as we here in Louisiana began to simultaneously experience what is now becoming the worst environmental disaster/oil spill since the Exxon Valdez, makes an already important exhibition even that much more so.  Our thoughts are with those families who have lost loved ones in the oil rig explosion as well as with the many families here in Louisiana and around the United States whose livelihoods will be adversely impacted as a result.   The resulting damage to our fragile coastal ecosystem was due to gross misconduct, negligence and greed. The damage was preventable and as such is unacceptable but it is now, unfortunately, inevitable.   We hope that each of you, viewing the exhibition online or in person here in New Orleans, takes away something you might be able turn into a positive action toward the future for yourself, your family and your community.

Sincerely,
Melissa Roberts and Kurt Schlough, Directors

This group exhibition features new work by Jonas Angelet, Nikkita Bhakta, Richard Elaver/Phil Renato/Dennis Dollens, Chris Esposito, Sayaka Ganz, Marc Holt, Yeji Jun and Molly Rogers

The exhibition runs through May 29, 2010.  Gallery hours are TH/FRI: 1pm - 6pm and SAT/SUN: 11am - 6pm.  The full exhibition is now viewable online at: http://www.becaicad.org/upcoming-exhibitions.php

Artists receive 60% of sale proceeds and The BECA Foundation receives 40% of sale proceeds to help fund + further its international exhibition programming for the benefit of artists, designers and the public. Exhibition sponsorship opportunities are available for future exhibitions. Please email us to inquire. Thank you for supporting new art + new design + new ideas!

Upcoming Exhibition:

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 5, 2010 from 6pm – 9pm

The BECA Foundation is pleased to present Sublime Affliction, a solo exhibition of new sculptural works by Jenn Parnell, at BECA ICAD (International Center for Art + Design), 527 St. Joseph Street, New Orleans, LA 70130 - across from the Contemporary Arts Center.

When discussing the development of Sublime Affliction, Jenn Parnell states:  Imagery of cellular pathology inspires Sublime Affliction, a collection of wearable amuletic objects that addresses the intersection between health, belief and body image. The handheld and interactive objects, supported by explorations of form and pattern, speak to both the psychological aspects of disease and the faith mechanisms necessary to cope with diagnoses. Cellular imagery inspires decorative patterns for site specific installation on the body summoning questions of beauty. The pieces in Sublime Affliction emphasize the intimacy of jewelry and work with the dual nature of the private versus public aspect of jewelry. The pieces grow from the concept of jewelry as an intimate item that tangibly affects the person wearing it in a physical sense as well as psychologically. I set out to make pieces that were definitely jewelry, but were worn less as decoration for an outfit or appearance, but as supplements and mutations of the body itself.”

The exhibition runs through June 25, 2010. Gallery hours are TH/FRI: 1pm - 6pm and SAT/SUN: 11am - 6pm. The full exhibition will be viewable online at www.BECAICAD.org beginning June 1st.

BECA Wish List

On behalf of the artists, designers and public who are the recipients of our public art + design exhibition and educational programming as well as on behalf of the dedicated volunteers and interns of The BECA Foundation, we express our daily gratitude for your support.

Below you will find the current items or appeals for dedicated funds most needed to sustain The BECA Foundation efforts:

1 - The BECA Foundation has a great need to hire a part-time Volunteer Coordinator. As a small, currently volunteer run non-profit organization, we rely heavily on our volunteer support system.  Hiring a part-time Volunteer Coordinator will provide a key component in sustaining the delivery of our international exhibition programming benefiting artists, designers and the public. Our cost to hire a part-time Volunteer Coordinator for one year is $13,800. If you would like to offer your assistance in helping us to reach this goal, please visit https://www.fracturedatlas.org/site/contribute/donate/2073 in order to place a tax-deductible online donation via our 501-c-3 fiscal sponsor, the great folks at Fractured Atlas, a national non-profit arts service organization. In return, you'll be helping to employ an arts worker in New Orleans and you will also assist us in creating a much needed BECA Foundation support system. If you prefer to make your donation by mail, please make your check payable to 'Fractured Atlas', noting The BECA Foundation in the memo of your check, and mail to us at: BECA, PO Box 56843, New Orleans, LA 70156.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING NEW ART + NEW DESIGN + NEW IDEAS!
