The Shawnee Gallery is pleased to showcase contemporary women artists who live and work in proximity to the Delaware River. The exhibition features work by nationally recognized artists, and is on display during May and June, 2010. Located in the historic village of Shawnee-On-Delaware, The Shawnee Gallery celebrates an Arts and Craft Tradition with art and artifacts of the Delaware River Region, both historic and contemporary. The exhibition included three sculptural baskets by Lindsay K. Gates, a Milford resident, whose work is has been included in museum exhibitions across the nation.
Lindsay received the "Award of Excellence" at the 2003 Smithsonian Craft Show in Washington DC, and the 2004 CraftBoston, Boston MA show. Lindsay's work has been featured on the cover of and on the pages of Metalsmith MagazineAmerican Craft Magazine, FiberArts and Shuttle, Spindle and Dyepot Magazine and Surface Design Journal. In 2005, Lindsay was a Pennsylvania Council on the Art's "Individual Creative Arts Fellow."
Lindsay's work transcends perceptions of basketry. Marrying common objects, such as metal washers and pistachio nut shells, with woven mesh and an intricate knotless netting wire technique, her baskets speak to the power of alchemic transformation. Simple materials become elegiac, metaphoric forms with remarkable patterns and textures.
