For this exhibition Wen Wu is continuing to develop fresh techniques and
maintains a dynamic practice while exploring new approaches. She combines
classical Chinese methods and Western stylistic devices in a contemporary style.
Wu joins perspectives from different histories and cultures with a result that
she calls ‘the beautiful'. In her latest series of paintings -
‘Decadent Dynasty', Wen is reflecting on her Chinese roots and her
culture's attitude to clandestine
love.
Wen's inspiration has developed since she was a little girl. Initially she was
captivated by female beauty now she is focusing and exploring young men. The
artist has created her personal alter ego character, a timeless middle aged and
gay
man.
The other steady influence in Wen's work has been film making, this has
manifested in a story board composed of paintings. The artist view as a whole a
narrative is unveiled, yet each piece individually, stands up as an interesting
artwork in its own
right.
Whilst visiting China, she documented ambiguous atmospheres; such as Dong Dan
park in Beijing – a traditional place for gay men to meet. She has also
been inspired to create her own dream world influenced by Chinese literature
– ‘dream of red mansion'. Her most recent work reflects this, with
more than 50 figures in a huge 2.5 x 4.5M
painting.
Sartorial is opening its door to tell the story of Wen Wu, while the artist
opens her heart to tell you about ‘the beauty' in a enchanting and
romantic
way.
