Daughter of internationally renowned artist Al Souza, Alyson Souza
was born in Bridgeport
Connecticut in 1968 and grew up in western Massachusetts. At seventeen,
Souza received a full
scholarship to the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art
in New York City, where she
graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Alyson's work then
appeared in several group shows in
lower Manhattan.
In 1993 she began to work in wood, constructing intricate
three-dimensional oil paintings. She did so in
the east village, until 1997, when she moved to Los Angeles, where she
had her first solo exhibition in
2000 entitled Mind Matters at the Robert Berman Gallery in Santa
Monica. In 2003 Alyson received a
grant from The Ucross Foundation in Wyoming where she completed a
six-week residency. She
followed that with a solo exhibition at the Robert Berman Gallery,
entitled Anatomy of Dysfunction for
which she received "Pick of the Week" in LA Weekly.
In 2005 an "Artist's Profile" of Souza and her work was shown on HGTV.
Since then her work has been
included in shows in San Francisco, New York, Houston Texas and
throughout southern California. In
2008 she purchased a 100 year old Victorian house in downtown Los
Angeles and spent the next two
years meticulously restoring it to its original splendor. While Alyson
also maintains a residence in New
York City, she has relocated her studio to downtown Los Angeles.
Recently she has been asked to
include her work in a show at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Hollywood this
March, as well as the Santa
Monica Museum of Art in May.
