ABOUT ART LEAGUE HOUSTON'S HEALING ART
PROGRAM
Now in its 20th year, Art
League Houston's Healing Art program provides free art instruction,
creative expression and a supportive community to adults living with serious
disease and disability, including HIV/AIDS, cancer related illnesses, multiple
sclerosis, fibromyalgia, and physical disabilities.
Since its inception, the
Healing Art program has enriched and enhanced the lives of adults
living with serious illness. This free program provides participants with
positive alternatives to feelings of loneliness, boredom and anxiety, so often
associated with those experiencing chronic health problems. Participants
in the Healing Art program experience camaraderie and a sense of pride
and accomplishment that comes from creative expression. They are given
opportunities to show and share their work with the community at large.
The program also provides its students with professional development as they
learn the skills required to successfully prepare, exhibit, and sell their work.
This encouragement and support contributes to them becoming more active and
self-sufficient. Most importantly, the ALH Healing Art
program reinforces the notion that the individual afflicted is much more
than his or her illness or disability.
ALH Healing Art classes are conducted in a fun and supportive
atmosphere. Each Friday, from September to May, Art League Houston studios are
filled to capacity with Healing Art
students. Tuition and art supplies are
provided at no cost to the students, and lunch is provided, thanks to the
generosity of Niko Niko's and the National Council of Jewish Women.
Healing Art students also have opportunities to exhibit and sell
their work through ALH's Summer Healing
Art Exhibition and Benefit, and its
Fall Gala Auction. In addition, Healing
Art students also exhibit at area
galleries and businesses throughout the
year.
SUPPORT FOR THE HEALING ART
PROGRAM
Art League Houston wishes to thank
JPMorgan Chase for the opportunity to exhibit art by the Healing
Art students.
In addition, Art League Houston
acknowledges the following private foundations, public funders, and corporations
for their support: Art Colony Association, Inc., Lindsey M. Duhon Fund,
ExxonMobil, Jerry's Artarama, Krewe of Olympus-Texas, Inc., Ray C. Fish
Foundation, Lone Star Chapter of the National M S Society, McCoy Workplace
Solutions, Alice Kleberg Reynolds Foundation, Venue, and The Wachovia Wells
Fargo Foundation.
In-kind support is
contributed by the National Council of Jewish Women and Niko Niko's. In
addition, the program is supported in part by a grant from the Texas Commission
on the Arts. Art League Houston also thanks the many individuals who
support the Healing Art program
through donations, volunteer work, and purchases of paintings by Healing Art students.
