Frozen and Filtered | Sonjie
Feliciano Solomon
"Frozen and Filtered" will feature
Ms.
Feliciano Solomon's ethereal organza sculptures, mirrored wall pieces,
and
enamel paintings. The organza constructions, which are the centerpiece
of
the exhibition, integrate mathematical principles and artistic insight.
These
delicate wonders, designed to collapse into small packages, create
an
atmosphere of calm and tranquility by capturing and diffusing light, and
appear
to defy gravity. All of her work is inspired by natural elements and
fleeting
events, such as sunlight breaking through clouds, fog rolling over hills
and
reflections on water, but fabricated using man-made materials
and
computer-aided design. Sonjie isolates and simulates natural phenomena
and
recreates the universal feeling of wonder on a very basic level.

Sonjie
Feliciano Solomon was born in Manila, Philippines and now lives and works
in
Brooklyn, New York. After receiving a degree in industrial design with
honors
from the Rhode Island School of Design, she worked for a variety of
furniture
and product design companies. Now Sonjie devotes her time to developing
work
that straddles the line between art, craft and design. Prior to a career in
the
arts, she received a business degree from Georgetown University. She
has
traveled extensively throughout Asia and Europe and her work as a
copywriter
for traditional and interactive advertising agencies led to stints in New
York,
Hong Kong and Boston. Unsatisfied with staring at a computer all day,
she
craved the fulfillment of building things with her hands and returned to
art
school.
Phantasm | Amanda Dow
Thompson
In the works on paper, Amanda Dow
Thompson continues to explore
the
relationship between reality and illusion. Playing with the
contradictory
themes of identity, individuality and conformance, the drawings
reference
transient, translucent marks first made by solid objects. Glimpses
that
flicker, spin and dissolve, whisper or shriek according to light, time and
the
viewer's perspective. There is a sense of metamorphosis; as pieces
which start as replication, spare and unadorned, begin to flesh out
in
layer, abundance and color. With obsessive repetition, and as the lines
between
positive and negative blur, drawings take on personalities of their own and
are
yet tied to their original form. The pieces, hung together, begin to tell
a
story; each image a phase in the journey of the whole. The subject
matter
appears to disintegrate, char, melt, freeze, or decay. But as the
work
struggles through the elements, it emerges, fresh, vibrant and melodious,
and
one is reminded not only of vulnerability but also of resilience. The
images
breathe, sing and soar in a celebration of our capacity for
resourcefulness,
for reinvention and for reviviscence.
