The Artery in Davis, Califoria presents "Taken Out of Context: California Abstract Photography",
fine art photography by Ursula Esser and Anne Miller. The exhibition runs from July 7 to August 4, 2010.
The reception for Ursula Esser and Anne Miller Taken Out of Context: California Abstract Photography coincides with the Davis Second Friday ArtAbout: Friday, July 9.
Ursula Esser's took many of her photos while visiting the central California coast near Big Sur. Her color work includes abstract elements and ethereal purple hues derived from manganese garnet found on Big Sur's sandy beaches. Historic structures in the Central Valley and coast inspired her architectural and urban abstracts. Ursula's images have been published by the Natural History magazine and online, as well as in the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations publications. Her Central Valley photographs have also been highlighted in the San Francisco Chronicle.
Anne Miller finds mysterious aspects in ordinary objects. Her unusual perspective is captured in photos taken near her northern California home. She uses the camera to extract uncommon images from commonplace things: farm implements abandoned in fields, cast-off junk discarded by roadsides, rusting ship hulls, sprawling weeds, weathered wood, and peeling paint. Anne's hours in the digital darkroom reveal strange beauties in texture, color, pattern, shape, and form that excite the imagination and invite repeated exploration.
