Old library books destined for the dump are being given new life in a fascinating show at the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art in Novato. Sixty artists, mostly from the Bay Area, were asked to apply their creative imaginations to create an "altered book". These 60 highly unique works of art are being shown in a Silent Auction benefiting the museum. The show opened with Talk by Donna Seager of the Donna Seager Gallery in San Rafael. The show runs concludes on August 28 with a fundraiser art auction from 5 to 7.
This Book Show to benefit MarinMOCA show works by 60 artists who have altered a book for the show. Each artist was provided with a book obtained from library discards destined for the dump.
The books will be offered at a Silent Auction, which will run concurrently with the Member Show (opening July 24 and
closing August 28). At the end of the show, the books will be auctioned off in a LIVE AUCTION event on Saturday,
August 28, 5 to 7 pm.
Artists have used the books in whatever fashion they chose: folded the pages, cut into it, created cutouts, gesso-ed and painted over, added fabric, made a journal, collaged it, waxed it, burned it, made a sculpture, whatever! Making an altered book has offered artists a chance to try a new medium. These artists have created some amazing works of art with these old library discards.
