Cain Schulte Gallery Berlin eröffnet die Herbstsaison mit einer Doppelausstellung: Präsentiert werden der New Yorker Künstler Don Porcella und die Berliner Künstlerin Susanne Ring. Die schrägen und skurrilen Installationen von Don Porcella 'Natural Selection' und Susanne Ring 'Verholzen' treten in einen humorvollen und seltsamen Dialog über den Sinn des Lebens und die damit verbundene menschliche Existenz. Die Ausstellung wird mit einer Vernissage am 3. September um 19.00 Uhr in Anwesenheit beider Künstler eröffnet.

In seinen absurden und ungewöhnlichen Installationen kombiniert Don Porcella Skulpturen aus geflochtenen Pfeifenputzern mit Tafeln in Enkaustik, bei der in Wachs gebundene Farbpigmente heiß auf den Maluntergrund aufgetragen werden. Alle Arbeiten sind inspiriert von Kindheitserinnerungen an den amerikanischen Alltag: Einkaufsstrassen, Shoppingmalls, seine Faszination für Science Fiction und Campingausflüge mit den Eltern in die Berge Kaliforniens und Nevadas. Die Skulpturen zeigen in ihrer natürlichen Materialität - Holz und Bienenwachs - seine Vorliebe für die Nähe zur Natur. Er bezieht in ironischer und subtiler Geste Stellung zur zerstörerischen Kraft des Menschen in der Moderne.

Porcellas Arbeiten eröffnen eine frische Perspektive auf das komplexe und oft ambivalente Verhältnis zwischen Natur und Mensch. In 'Natural Selection' wählt er Objekte aus, die auf die Ernsthaftigkeit von Global Warming und Ausrottung der Arten hindeuten.

Don Porcella ist in Modesto, Kalifornien, geboren, und siedelte nach dem Kunst- und Psychologiestudium nach New York um. Er arbeitete als Assistent für Miriam Schapiro und David Sale und erwarb den Master Bachelor in Malerei und Bildhauerei vom Hunter College in New York. Porcellas Installationen, Enkaustiks und Zeichnungen sind in Galerien in New York, Berlin, Paris, San Francisco, Washington, San Diego und Portland zu sehen.

'Ich empfinde meine Auswahlprozesse, oder meine gedanklichen Strukturen, die als Schlüssel zu meiner Arbeit funktionieren, wie ein großes Netz, mit dem ich wie in einem Meer fische. Manch Dinge, die drin hängen bleiben, werden verworfen und andere werden für gut befunden. Aber das ist nicht unbedingt ein gezielter Feldzug, sonder ein Im-Trüben-Fischen und hoffe, dass etwas brauchbares hängen bleibt.'

In der Installation 'Verholzen' von Susanne Ring finden wir ein solches gefischtes Netz - ein fantastisches Ensembles mit fließenden Übergängen von Skulptur und Zeichnung, Keramik und Malerei. In der Zusammenfügung von vielen Einzelarbeiten, kombiniert aus unterschiedlichsten Materialien, untersucht sie die Brüchigkeit unterhalb der psychologischen Oberfläche. Fragen nach der menschlichen Existenz werden auf absurde, organische und ehrliche Art in einerspielerische Räumlichkeit gestellt. Kurios und ironisch lassen sich Portraits von innerlichen Zuständen, vermischt mit Anspielungen auf das Unheimliche, Phantastisches und Groteske, entdecken.

Plastiken aus Keramik, Stein und Holz zeigen brüchige Körper, Einschnitte, erahnte Verletzungen oder Verkrüppelungen und geben Zerbrechlichkeit, Verletzlichkeit und Fragilität eine kindlich verspielte Plattform.

Susanne Ring wurde in Mainz geboren und lebt und arbeitet in Berlin und Dresden. Sie schloss ihr Kunststudium an der Universität der Künste Berlin bei Prof. Dieter Appelt und Prof. Christiane Möbus als Meisterschülerin ab. Zur Zeit ist sie als Vertretungsprofessorin an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden tätig. Ihre Arbeiten werden in Galerien in Europa und Japan ausgestellt und sind in privaten und öffentlichen Sammlungen vertreten.

Don Porcella 'Natural Selection'
and
Susanne Ring 'Lignification'

Cain Schulte Gallery Berlin opens the fall season with a double solo exhibition, presenting New York artist Don Porcella and Berlin artist Susanne Ring. Porcella's installation Natural Selection and Ring's Lignification create a humorous and peculiar dialogue about the meaning of life and the appended questions about human existence. The exhibitions will be opened with a reception on September 3rd at 7 pm. Both artists will be present.

Porcella's installations combine sculptures, made out of braided pipecleaner with encaustic panels, suggesting a lighthearted frivolity that conceals a deeper environmental and nature loving agenda, and his understanding of consumerism, reality and our own weird mortality. Porcella sees Natural Selection as an opportunity to shed light on our wasteful ways and poke fun at human's tendency to harm the environment. Spoofing Darwin's famous proclamation, this exhibition is a selection of objects relating to nature, tied together with his own imagery of the suburban, his interest in folk art, cartoons, and science fiction, memories of shopping malls and huge hikes through California and Nevada's spectacular mountain wilderness.

Porcella's paintings, drawings and sculpture allow the subjective and strange to penetrate humorous representations of a wildly imaginative reality.His unique approach of making his own encaustic paintings reinforces the significance of life's blunders presenting a mysterious world that is shamelessly awkward and unabashedly comical.

I think of the metaphor of a fishing net in the ocean, when selecting my ideas, or viewing my mental structures. Sometimes, things I fish will be thrown back and sometimes, I find useful things and keep them. But this is not necessarily a conscious process, but more a 'fishing in the dark' and hoping that something useful will stick.

Susanne Ring's installation Lignification represents such a fishing net with a flowing ensemble of sculptures, drawings, ceramics and paintings. Ring explores the brittleness underneath our psychological surface in a conglomeration of several single works of art, created in a variety of materials. She suggests questions about human existence in a comical and straightforward manner. Playfully arranged are depicted portraits of inner circumstances, intermingled with allusions to things eerie, phantasmagorial and grotesque.

The sculptures of ceramic, stone and wood indicate decayed bodies, cuts, injuries or crippledness, and give human fragility and vulnerability a coltish platform.

About the artists:

Don Porcella was born in Modesto, California. After obtaining his BA in art and psychology, he moved to New York to acquire the MA in painting and sculpture at Hunter's College. He was assistant to Miriam Schapiro and David Sale, Porcella's art has been exhibited at galleries in New York City, Berlin, Germany, East Hampton, NY, Paris, France, Portland, Oregon, Washington D.C. and San Francisco, California. The West Collection (www.westcollection.org) purchased an entire installation in 2008 and he has been featured in several art related publications and newspaper reviews.

Susanne Ring was born in Mainz, Germany and lives and works in Berlin and Dresden. She finished her MFA at the UdK in Berlin, being a highly recognized student of Prof. Dieter Appelt and Prof. Christiane Möbus. At the moment she is assistent Professor at the School of Arts in Dresden. Her works have been presented by various galleries in Europe and Japan and are collected in several public and private collections.
