The Contemporary Art
Society’s office in Emerald Street provides the opportunity for us to
showcase the work of artists, artist-run spaces and galleries working outside
London. We host the launch events of new installations twice a year, often
arranging complementary events to contextualise the work being shown. We welcome
visitors to see work from 9.30 – 17.30 Monday to
Friday.
Bureau is a contemporary gallery based in Manchester and a partner in
Contemporary Art Society’s North West Members Scheme. Bureau works
internationally with represented and invited artists at varying career stages to
provide a platform and context for dynamic and innovative contemporary visual
practice. The gallery programme is complemented by support for artists’
practice through international collaborations, exchange and residency projects,
publishing initiatives, and participation in art
fairs.
Bureau’s recent programme has included a solo exhibition and residency
in collaboration with Manchester Art Gallery for Jerwood Drawing Prize 2009
winner Mit Senoj; a solo show by Andy Holden
following his hugely successful Art Now project at Tate Britain; and off-site
project The Economy of the Gift at A Foundation, Liverpool with
Mark Harasimowicz. Bureau will be participating in The
Manchester Contemporary in October
2010.
For Rotate, Bureau have collaborated with The Whitworth Art Gallery, a
Contemporary Art Society Member Museum. Curated by Sophia
Crilly, Industry & Idleness features work by Jacob
Cartwright, Dave Griffiths, Mark Harasimowicz, Mark Kennard, Tim Machin, Paul
Needham, Vinca Petersen, Mit Senoj and Evangelia
Spiliopoulou.
The works were selected in response to both the site-specific context they
are shown in - the Contemporary Art Society exhibition space as an office
environment or workplace - and to the themes explored in one of the key print
suites in The Whitworth’s historic collection, William Hogarth’s
Industry & Idleness, created in
1747.
