Oct. 1, 2010-Jan. 9, 2011
On Oct. 1, the RISD Museum of
Art presents the North American premier of Lynda Benglis, a major survey of the
influential American sculptor. More than 50 works are included in a variety of
mediums spanning her remarkable 40-year career, dating from the 1960s through
today. Pioneering sculptures, paintings, videos, photographs, and
installations-many rarely exhibited-are featured. Lynda Benglis, organized by
the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin in collaboration with The RISD Museum and
other institutions in Europe and the United States, is accompanied by a fully
illustrated book published on the occasion of the exhibition. After its run
here, the exhibition will travel to the New Museum in New York

European
Galleries
(Radeke Restoration Project)
Opens Oct.
2010
The Museum's European galleries will also
reopen this fall. In October, visitors will see for the first time new
installations that combine paintings and sculpture with decorative arts, works
on paper, and textiles from Renaissance to the Neoclassical period.
WINTER
2010
Collision
Nov. 12, 2010-Mar. 10, 2011
Gallery walls will become artists' medium this winter as guest
curator and abstract painter Jackie Saccoccio (RISD BFA '85) creates the
exhibition Collision. Saccocciohas invited 17 artists to contribute to an
ongoing installation with several artists working directly on the gallery walls.
The artworks and processes juxtapose and collide with each other in vibrant and
unexpected ways. The idea for the installation was inspired by Robert
Rauschenberg's "combines" and his belief that the world can be viewed as a
"gigantic painting from which to crop."
Changing
Poses: An Intimate Look at the Artist's Model
Nov. 12, 2010-Jun. 5, 2011
Changing Poses: An Intimate Look at the Artist's Model
looks at the human figure as an enduring subject for artists. Drawn from The
RISD Museum's permanent collection, this exhibition shows how the model was a
crucial component in the creation of some of the its finest holdings of
drawings, prints, and photographs. The show includes works by Giambattista
Tiepolo, Edgar Degas, John Singer Sargent, Andy Warhol, and many
others.
SPRING
2011
Cocktail Culture
Apr. 15-Jul. 31, 2011
"Civilization begins with distillation," wrote William Faulkner. The
cocktail is the subject of renewed interest across the country as artisan
bartenders explore the cocktail culture of past generations, revive old recipes,
and seek special ingredients for new creations. Cocktail Culture, organized by
the Museum's Department of Costume and Textiles and curated by Joanne Dolan
Ingersoll, is the first major exhibition to look at the social ritual of
drinking and entertainment through the art of fashion and design. This exciting
show will include more than 200 objects-from decorative art such as barware,
furniture, graphic arts and photography to stunning examples of cocktail attire
by Cristobal Balenciaga, Pierre Balmain, Pierre Cardin, Coco Chanel, and Elsa
Schiaparelli, to name a few.
