Le travail de Laura Lima se présente sous diverses formes: performances, installations, dessins et interventions. Elle structure sa pratique autour d'un glossaire personnel de sa propre invention dans lequel ses idées sont émises et catégorisées en ce qu'elle appelle des Instancias: différentes manières de penser et de créer des images poétiques.

C'est dans les années 90 que Lima a entamé une de ses séries les mieux connues, intitulée Man=flesh/Woman=flesh. En attribuant une variété de tâche à certaines personnes et en créant des équipements adaptés à l'intervention, elle créait des tableaux poétiques. Par exemple, un homme attaché par de longs fils à des arbres au haut d'une montagne avait comme tâche de ramener le paysage à l'intérieur de la galerie. Une autre Instancia prenait la forme d'un magasin de costumes créés par l'artiste avec lequel le public était invité à interagir. Dans un autre projet, des poulets vivants était décorés avec des plumes colorées.

Souvent représentée en lien avec la nature ou l'exotisme, l'idée de la beauté et de l'ornement est centrale à la pratique de l'artiste. Consciente du fait que cette idée avait été mise de côté par l'avant-garde au siècle dernier, elle la reprend à nouveau par le biais de l'histoire de l'art, mais aussi d'un point de vue existentialiste : est-ce possible d'exister sans le désir d'embellir ou de décorer notre univers?

À La Centrale, Laura Lima présente Philosophie Ornementale, une exploration de l'action et des circonstances de l'ornementation. L'exposition est composée de masques de formes géométriques construits de manière à inviter les visiteurs à les décorer selon leur propre gré.

Laura Lima est Lauréate de l'Université d'état de Rio de Janeiro et a étudié à l'école des arts visuels de Parque Lage. Son travail a été présenté dans plusieurs expositions, dont la 24ième et la 27ième Biennale de Sao Paulo, ainsi que la 2ième et la 3ième Biennale Mercosul à Porto Alegre, au Brésil. Elle fut la première artiste à vendre une performance au Musée d'art moderne de Sao Paulo et est récipiendaire du prix Marcantônio Vilaça. Lima est fondatrice, avec les artistes Ernesto Neto et Marcio Botner, de la Galerie Gentil Carioca, à Rio de Janeiro.

Laura Lima's practice shifts from performance to drawing, installation, and intervention. She structures her practice around a personal glossary where her ideas are named and organized in what she calls Instancias; different categories of thinking and making poetic images.

In the mid-nineties Lima initiated one of her best known series Man=flesh/Woman=flesh. By assigning people a variety of tasks and by constructing special apparatus for the situation, she created poetic live tableaux. For example, a man attached to trees by long threads on top of a mountain was asked to pull the landscape into the gallery. Another Instancia consisted of a costume shop, where the public was invited to engage with costumes produced by the artist, trying them on or modifying them. In another project live chickens were decorated with ornaments and colorful feathers.

Often presented in relation to the natural world, the idea of beauty and ornament is central to the artist's practice. Conscious that this idea has been pushed aside by the avant-garde in the last century, she investigates it from an art historical point of view as well as from an existentialist angle: is it possible for us to exist without embellishing or ornamenting our world?

At La Centrale, Lima will present Ornamental Philosophy, an exploration of the action and circumstances of ornamentation. The exhibition is composed of geometric masks constructed in order to invite the public to adorn them as they wish.

Laura Lima is a philosophy graduate of The State University of Rio de Janeiro and a former student of the School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage. Her work has been shown in several exhibitions, including the 24th and 27th São Paulo Biennale, the 2nd and 3rd Mercosul Biennale in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The artist was first to sell a performance piece to the Modern Art Museum of São Paulo and won the Marcantônio Vilaça Prize in 2006. Together with artists Ernesto Neto and Marcio Botner, Lima founded the gallery A Gentil Carioca, in Rio de Janeiro.

Performance

La centrale accepte des propositions de performance pour sa programmation lors de l'événement de performance Viva! art action, qui aura lieu en septembre/octobre 2011, à Montréal. Cet événement regroupe des artistes de performance de diverses approches, de provenance locale et internationale.

Cet événement aura lieu en mars 2011 et La Centrale y présentera deux performances d'artistes du Québec ainsi qu'une programmation vidéo présentant le travail d'une dizaine d'artistes Québécoises. Les frais de déplacement des artistes de performance seront assumés par l'organisation Désordres.

Vitrine de Noël

La Centrale offre sa vitrine sur la Main comme plateforme d'exposition. La galerie étant fermée durant la période des fêtes, le projet sélectionné ne nécessitera pas de soutien technique durant l'exposition.

Performance

La Centrale is accepting proposals for performance to be presented during the performance event Viva! art action, taking place in September/October 2011, in Montreal. The event brings together local and international artists and presents a wide variety of approaches within the discipline.

La Centrale will present two performances by artists living in Québec, as well as a video program comprised of a variety of works by Québecois artist. Travel costs for the performance artists will be covered by the organisation Désordres.

During the Christmas holidays, La Centrale offers its window on the Main as a platform for exhibition. Since the gallery will be closedduring the holidays, the chosen project should not require technical support during the exhibition.
