The Coningsby
Gallery is proud to announce Helen Brough’s solo show Deliriously
Urbane from the 4th to the 9th of October. Brough is presenting a new series of
paintings in her signature medium of oil on aluminium.
Deliriously
Urbane takes us through cities at different times of the day, immersing us
in the colours and textures of places we cannot identify but which feel
strangely familiar. Brough’s urban landscapes are neither naturalistic nor
abstract. Evoking an urban experience, suspended in an ambiguous territory
rather than the urban space itself, the paintings depict the sensation of city
life rather than the city landmarks we may be familiar with.
Helen
Brough is a British artist. Educated at Chelsea School of Art in London,
she went on to gain the Prix de Rome at the British school in Rome. Thanks to
the Pollock/Krasner Award, Brough went to the Bemis Center of Contemporary Arts
in Omaha, Nebraska, USA, and then lived in New York until recently. Brough had
her first solo show at Kristen Fredrickson Contemporary Art in New York in 2003.
Brough has exhibited regularly in New York with Michel Allen at Allen Gallery,
and more recently at Elga Wimmer PCC,where she takes part in their upcoming
August group show. She is also a board member of the Triangle Arts Association,
a New York based non-profit arts organization. Brough’s work has been
collected by private and corporate collectors as well as public institutions in
the US, UK and Hungary amongst others. Deliriously Urbane represents
Brough’s homecoming as this is her first solo show in London
af
ter more than 15 years in the US.
