21 October to 4 December
2010
Please join us for the opening on Thursday, 21 October from
6 to 8
p.m.
For this
highly-anticipated exhibition, Arnaud Maggs continues his exploration of visual
taxonomies with a new suite of archival inkjet prints. Each print depicts a
19th century French diagrammatic drawing [UTF-8?]— from a collection that
Maggs recently discovered [UTF-8?]— made to educate carpenters in the more
complex areas of their trade. With some imagination, these elegant and
intricate schematics can be viewed as potential constructs of Cubist heads,
Constructivist faces, Dada experiments, or even portraits of their major
players. Maggs' altering of an existing system thus imposes his own system in
its place through his re-presentation and renaming of each drawing's
subject.
