SYS™
Drawings by Kevin Bourgeois
Brooklyn, NY  Sept. 2, 2010   Causey Contemporary is pleased to announce the opening of SYS™:  New Drawings by Kevin Bourgeois from October 21 - November 14, 2010 at the gallery's 92 Wythe Avenue location in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, NY.   A reception with the artist will be held on October 22 from 6 - 9 p.m.   This exhibition marks Mr. Bourgeois' second solo exhibition with the gallery; the first, Something Wicked This Way Comes was mounted in 2008.  SYS™ follows closely the recent inclusion of his work in a group exhibition at the Puffin Room in Manhattan for which he was also one of the curators.  Following the exhibition at Causey Contemporary, Kevin's drawings will appear at the Fountain art fair in Miami in December 2010.

Kevin Bougeois takes as his medium, graphite  and adds to it colored pencil along with found objects.   He combines formal drawing techniques with  strong socio-political messages while experimenting with form and content.  The themes of his extremely detailed drawings are centered around the juxtaposition of technology and human nature, individuality and consumer culture, superficiality and altruism.   The writings of Jean Baudrillard, Hakim Bey, Allen Ginsberg and Arthur Rimbaud appear frequently, interwoven with the drawings and often influencing the subject matter.    The SYS™  exhibition will again grapple with these issues drawing references figuratively and literally from current issues.    For this particular exhibition, Kevin has chosen as a leading quotation:

In the airless vault of our civilization, where nearly every experience is mediated, where reality
is strained through the deadening mesh of consensus - perception, we lose touch; we begin
to construct for ourselves personae based on what we consume, treating products as projections
of our yearning for the authentic.
                                                                         T.A. Z.

Kevin Bourgeois' drawings have appeared in both solo and group exhibitions in New York, New Jersey, Illinois, California and Singapore.    One of his pieces, Synthesis is included in the DRAW exhibition which is touring the USA and was at the Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico this past July.    The exhibition which features such asrtists as Alex Grey, HR Giger , Clive Barker and David Byrne was curated by Erik Foss of Fuse Gallery in NYC in conjunction with Curse Mackey.    Additionally, Kevin and his drawings have been featured in Vapors Magazine, Mad Skills Magazine, Ninja Magazine, Lucid Culture, Swindle Magazine, Wallspankers Magazine, Time Out NY, Asian Art News,  and the St. Petersburg Times.
