Shag "Last Table in
Vegas"
SHAG (aka Josh Agle):
This SHAG exhibition will feature previously sold out artist proof
prints by SHAG (aka Josh Agle). If you are unfamiliar with the work of SHAG
you might want to be careful where you walk so you don't fall off the side of
the planet. SHAG is a phenomenon in the art world and has executed works for
Disneyland, Coca Cola, the 40th Anniversary DVD set for the Pink Panther,
Showtime Too (cartoon featured prior to Queer As Folk) and countless other
projects as both an illustrator and fine artist. He has also done artwork for
numerous album and CD covers ranging from the Pixies to Smashmouth. Celebrities
like Courtney Cox and David Arquette, Lisa Kudrow, Dave Foley, Whoppi Goldberg
and countless others have been fortunate enough to acquire original pieces from
SHAG.
SHAG's paintings have a Jetsons meets James Bond like feel
and often incorporate cool mid-century modern party scenes. Look for super
villains, jetsetters, hipsters, icons, mythological figures, legends, retro
furniture and Tiki elements to set the tone of each work. His brilliant use of
color and imagery might even have you temporarily missing out on the clever
humor and satire contained in each painting. It might take you a bit to figure
out what exactly is going on in these scenes, however, the works are sure to
leave you smiling and maybe even wishing you lived the life of those in his
paintings.
SHAG will
be in attendance to visit with you and sign items purchased from his
pop-up store and any prints you want signed on the back. Get there early as
SHAG tends to draw a huge crowd and you won't want to miss any of the
fun!
David Weidman
"Flamingos"
Dave Weidman:
Not only did 89 year old background painter/animator/gallery owner/master
print maker Dave Weidman influence gallery artist favorites SHAG, Chris
Reccardi and Lynne Naylor; but his prints are also collected by these artists,
all of whom suggested we feature his works at m modern Gallery. Who are we to
argue!
These painstakingly beautiful hand-pulled serigraphs were
produced many years ago, before the introduction of current photo-mechanical
reproduction processes. This mostly vintage method leaves these serigraph
prints all slightly different within the same edition. The end result is a
fantastic looking piece of artwork for all to enjoy with its own unique
character. Although the printing process used to make these prints required the
skills of a master printer (being David himself), it's the stunning images,
subject matter and colors that really drew our attention to these art works as
will they yours!
David, his
wonderful wife/collaborator Dorothy, and family have held these amazing art
gems close at hand until recently. With the recent David Weidman book titled
"The Whimsical Work of David Weidman", 2008, popular demand for these works has
escalated causing the family to agree to a select number of exhibitions with
galleries that are in sync with his style. Mid-Century Modern fans (like
ourselves) will surely be delighted by these colorful works and will take great
pride in placing these Vintage prints in their mid-century and contemporary
homes.
Unfortunately, David
Weidman will not be able to be in attendance for this event, however, he wishes
everyone a great time and thanks you for attending his
exhibition.
Chris Reccardi "Sixty
Six"
Chris Reccardi
Artist Chris Reccardi is an award-winning director, designer, storyboard
artist, animator and music composer. He's contributed to numerous acclaimed TV
and film projects such as "The Ren & Stimpy Show", "Samurai Jack", "The
Powerpuff Girls", "Shrek the Third", and features currently in production at
DreamWorks and Sony Pictures Animation. Chris won a Rueben Award from the
National Cartoonists Society in 2002 for outstanding Storyboard, was nominated
for an Annie Award for "Powerpuff Girls", and was nominated for an Emmy for
Nickelodeon's " Teenage Robot". Chris recently co-created/directed "The
Modifyers", a pilot for Nickelodeon, for which he also composed the music
score. Several of Chris' limited edition mod/psy-fi fine art paper and canvas
prints, in editions of 250, 100 and 50 will be on exhibition and for sale.
Chris Reccardi will not be in attendence at the exhibition but will be
at Mondo Lounge on Saturday
night.
Bosco "Twin
Kitties"
Bosko Hrnjak
Inspired by
mid-century modern themes and influenced by the California Tiki style (at once
modern, primitive and cartoonish), BOSKO has used the skills developed,
since graduating from the Art Center College Of Design in Pasadena, to produce
an absolutely beautiful collection of Tiki poles, ceramic Tiki mugs and
incredible Tiki Wall hangings as well as Wall Art inspired heavily by the
Mid-Century influences we have all come to love as Mid-Century Modern fans.
This show will feature amazing wall pieces that reflect the spirit of the
desert (both in Palm Springs and Las Vegas) and that capture the essence of
Modern Desert Living.
This body of work was created with
mid-century Vegas & (Palm Springs) in mind, but the basic style and materials
used in the artwork is an homage to the legendary "House of Witco". Witco was
America's premier manufacturer of hand carved furniture, art work and
environments, from the late 1950's to 1976. They outfitted Elvis Presley's
jungle room and Hugh Hefner's Chicago p layboy pool among many others. Any
theme that was popular during the mid-century was most certainly covered in
their product line, in some cases modern and elegant in others baroque and
outrageous it was most certainly "art" for the masses. Bosko has taken a
mid-century theme and added his contemporary twist while retaining a timeless
quality that works as well today as it could have 50 years ago. Unlike Witco
pieces that were mass produced, these works from Bosko are all one-of-a-kind
original artworks.
BOSKO
will be in attendance to meet you, so please feel free to go up to him and say
hello.
